    Tech's biggest misfires of 2011

The past 12 months have been a boon of technological innovation, particularly in the world of mobile devices, where top companies have been waging an arms race for the top of the smartphone and tablet hills. Not everything has been smooth sailing, however -- 2011 has also been dotted by delays, false starts, security breeches and straight up technological turf outs. Check out some of the lowlights from the year that was after the break.

New Satellites To Extend China's Military Reach

Chinese and foreign military experts say the PLA?s General Staff Department and General Armaments Department closely coordinate and support all of China?s space programs within the sprawling science and aerospace bureaucracy.

As part of this system, the Beidou, or ?Big Dipper,? network will have an important military role alongside the country?s rapidly expanding network of surveillance, imaging and remote sensing satellites.

China routinely denies having military ambitions in space.

Defense Ministry spokesman Yang Yujun on Wednesday dismissed fears the Beidou network would pose a military threat, noting that all international satellite navigation systems are designed for dual civilian and military use.

    Catching Up With The U.S.

China accelerated its military satellite research and development after PLA commanders found they were unable to track two U.S. aircraft carrier battle groups deployed in 1996 to the Taiwan Strait at a time of high tension between the island and the mainland, analysts say.

The effort received a further boost when it was shown how crucial satellite networks were in the 1991 Gulf War, the 1999 NATO bombing of Yugoslavia and the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

While China still lags behind the United States and Russia in overall space technology, over the last decade it has rapidly become a state-of-the-art competitor in space-based surveillance after deploying a range of advanced satellite constellations that serve military and civilian agencies.

With the launch of more than 30 surveillance satellites over the last decade, according to space technology experts, the PLA can monitor an expanding area of the earth?s surface with increased frequency, an important element of reliable military reconnaissance.

That coverage gives PLA commanders vastly improved capability to detect and track potential military targets.

Real-time satellite images and data can also be used to coordinate the operations of China?s naval, missile and strike aircraft forces in operations far from the mainland.

?What we are seeing is China broadly acquiring the same capabilities in this area as those held by the U.S.,? said Ross Babbage, a defense analyst and founder of the Canberra, Australia-based Kokoda Foundation, an independent security policy unit.

?Essentially, they are making most of the Western Pacific far more transparent to their military.?

In a recent article for the Journal of Strategic Studies, researchers Eric Hagt and Matthew Durnin attempted to estimate the capability of China?s space network using orbital modeling software and available data on satellite performance.

China?s most basic satellites carried electro-optical sensors capable of taking high resolution digital images in the visible and non-visible wavelengths, wrote the authors.

More advanced satellites launched in recent years carried powerful synthetic aperture radars that could penetrate cloud and cover much bigger areas in high detail.

Added to that, China was now deploying satellites that could monitor electronic signals and emissions, so-called electronic intelligence or ELINT platforms, the authors said.

?Next to China, only the United States possesses more capable tactical support systems in space for tactical operations,? they wrote.

U2, Taylor Swift Top List Of 2011's Highest-Grossing Tours

U2's 360 Tour is the year's most profitable in the U.S. and worldwide.

U2 didn't even release an album in 2011, but that didn't stop them raking in plenty of cash.

The iconic Irish quartet topped Pollstar's list of the year's most profitable tours, as their massive 360 Tour moved an impressive 2.4 million tickets worldwide, grossing more than $230 million globally. Their North American dates — which were postponed (and subsequently rescheduled) last year as Bono recovered from back surgery — made $156 million, good enough to give them the highest-grossing tour on this continent, too.

Taylor Swift had 2011's second most-profitable North American tour, as her expansive Speak Now jaunt racked up $97.7 million at the box office. Swift's country contemporary, Kenny Chesney, came in at #3, bringing in nearly $85 million in ticket sales, followed by Lady Gaga, who, despite wrapping up the North American leg of her Monster Ball tour in April, still managed to bring in $63.7 million at the box office. Bon Jovi rounds out Pollstar's top five, grossing more than $57 million.

Kanye West and Jay-Z's Throne tour ($48 million), Lil Wayne's "I Am Still Music" trek ($44 million), Britney Spears ($38 million) and Katy Perry ($28 million) also made the Top 25 in North America.

British boy band Take That's reunion tour came in second to U2's 360 trek based on worldwide receipts, making $224 million. Bon Jovi grossed nearly $150 million worldwide, good enough for third, with tours by Swift ($104 million worldwide) and Roger Waters ($103 million) rounding out the top five.

Also making Pollstar's worldwide list were Rihanna, the Foo Fighters, Justin Bieber, Usher and the Kings of Leon.

Did you attend any of the highest-grossing tours in 2011? Let us know in the comments!

New Mexico State University Advances their Algae Test Bed Research

    Home ? Algae/Other Aquatic Organisms, Energy, Farming/Growing, Federal Agency, Feedstock, Funding/Financing, New Mexico, R & D Focus, University/College Programs

(Algae Industry Magazine) ?Since early October, New Mexico State University?s Institute for Energy & the Environment (IEE) researchers have been transitioning from algae operations in the IEE water and energy lab to the Algae Test Bed Facility located at ?A? Mountain. They have been building up to the desired algae content in 10- and 100-liter bags, preparing to inoculate the facility?s indoor raceways?large algae holding tanks?with a strain of algae that is expected to produce cost-efficient biofuel. The effort is part of IEE?s algal biofuel program?an initiative to develop a cost-effective, efficient, and renewable source of biofuel.

The initiative is currently led by a team of scientists, engineers, and students. The Algae Test Bed Facility (ATBF) is funded in part by the U.S. Department of Energy?s National Energy Technologies Laboratory (NETL) and by the State of New Mexico. The site is envisioned as an integrated center, a test bed for water and energy. The concept aims to have each element of the site provide energy and water for another element, by using a combination of energy and water technologies with performance and functionality comparable, if not superior, to traditional sources of water and energy. Although still in conceptual stages, the implications of a realized version of the project are vast. ? READ MORE

"Game of Thrones" author posts excerpt from new book (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Fans of novelist George R. R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" fantasy series are melting. The "Game of Thrones" author just released a previously unpublished sample chapter from the upcoming sixth installment, "The Winds of Winter," on his Website.

At 6,100 words in length, the excerpt is substantial.

"The chronology, as usual, is tricky," Martin said on his LiveJournal page. "This chapter will be found eventually at the beginning of 'Winds,' but as you will be able to tell from context, it actually takes place before some of the chapters at the end of"

Martin also said another "Winds of Winter" sample chapter will be included in the paperback edition of "A Dance with Dragons," which is due in July. "A Dance With Dragons" was released in July 2011, 15 years after the first volume -- "A Game of Thrones" -- came out.

In an interview published in October, Martin said he had written 100 pages of "Winds," which will be published by Bantam Books. A release date has not been set for that book or its successor, "A Dream of Spring," which Martin plans to be the final installment in the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series.

In the meantime, Martin fans will bide their time with the second season of HBO's series adaptation "A Game of Thrones," which starts in April.

DIY Honey Sticks Add a Little Sweetness to Any Holiday Drink [Cooking]

DIY Honey Sticks Add a Little Sweetness to Any Holiday Drink If you're planning a New Year's Party or just serving up tea or hot toddies to your friends in the cold weather, a little sweetness is in order. You can add a little visual interest and a little sweetness to those drinks by making your own flavored honey sticks, and all you need are some colored straws, the honey, and flavored extracts. In a few minutes, you'll have flavored honey sticks that you can use for grown-up and kid beverages alike.

The method is pretty simple?you'll need a bendy straw to do it, and you can just trim off the bendy part and put the open end into the jar of honey or up to the jar's pour spout. If you have a narrow funnel that can pour into the straw body, that will work too. Just fill the straw about 4/5 of the way with honey, and then use a dropper to add a few drops of the flavored extract you want, whether it's lemon, vanilla, almond, peppermint, or anything else you want to try.

The folks at Serious Eats suggest leaving one end taped shut and the other end open, so you can put the sticks into a container tape-end down and your guests can turn them over and squeeze the honey out, but you could seal both ends of the straw with some parchment paper or freezer paper and a quick hit on either end with an iron. That way they're more like the honey sticks you would get in a store, and they'll keep much longer. Then your kids or guests can grab a flavor they like, add it to their tea or drink, and enjoy. Have a better way to make the sticks? Let's hear it in the comments below.

Gold futures or stocks? Analyst picks stocks.

Gold futures fall below $1,600 an ounce. Noted economist Gartman sees stocks outperforming gold futures.

On a day in which?gold prices?hovered around $1,600 an ounce, widely followed investor?Dennis Gartman?said there were better plays around.

??I think one is going to do better by owning steel, owning copper, owning railroads, owning Apple, than one will doing being long of the gold market,? he said Tuesday. ?Up until August of last year, gold seriously outperformed equities.?

    ?U.S. gold futures?dipped 0.7 percent to close at $1,594.80 an ounce, while?spot gold?closed down $12 at $1,592.96.

The noted economist and editor of?The Gartman Letter?said on ?Fast Money? that the precious metal continued to lag and reiterated his neutral view on the trade.

?Gartman made headlines when he announced that he had?sold all the gold in his personal account, a move he said was justified.

??Gold has begun to seriously underperform equities, and I moved, rather shockingly, to the point of being out of the gold market and long of equities against the euro, and it?s been a wonderful trade,? he said.

?Last week, Gartman predicted that the?S&P 500 would outperform gold and global stocks.

?For now, it would take significant trading action to get him back in the gold trade.

??We?ve seen reversals on charts before where you make a new low and then close higher on the day,? he said. ?We?re going to have to see that sort of price action rather than price itself, or rather than some event.?

PFT: Brees breaks Marino's mark, but Brady's looming

    Tony Romo, Jerry JonesAP

During Saturday?s loss to the Eagles, Cowboys owner Jerry Jone went down to the sideline to talk to head coach Jason Garrett, to make sure Garrett knew the Giants had won earlier in the day and therefore the Cowboys didn?t have anything to play for.

Some fans and media members have suggested that Jones was out of line by doing that, but Jones says he can?t understand why anyone would think the owner of a business shouldn?t be involved in every element of that business.

?It has amazed me to be criticized for really walking down on the floor of the company,? Jones said on KTCK-AM 1310, via the Dallas Morning News. ?The more involved your top management, the more involved ownership can be, I?ve always thought made the best way for it to work.?

Jones says he doesn?t act any differently on game days now than he did in the 1990s, and that it worked out pretty well then.

?You didn?t see that kind of criticism very early on, but we were winning Super Bowls,? Jones said. ?And it was the same exact way that we handled our decision-making and the exact same way that we handled our ultimate information gathering system. We?ve been doing it ever since I owned the team. The exact same way.?

Jones says he doesn?t tell Garrett who can play and who can?t, but he did want to make sure Garrett understood that quarterback Tony Romo didn?t need to take any chances by playing in an essentially meaningless game against the Eagles.

?That?s Jason?s decision, but he doesn?t need to be making that one by himself,? Jones said. ?So I wanted to, very briefly, step down there with just a few minutes gone in the first quarter, sit there and say, ?Here?s the lay of the land. Romo?s got a hand injury, but it looks like we?re going to have him for New York.??

And if Jones thinks his coach might not know the lay of the land, Jones is going to make sure his coach knows the lay of the land. That?s going to be the case as long as Jones owns the Cowboys.

Argentine president diagnosed with thyroid cancer (Reuters)

BUENOS AIRES (Reuters) ? Argentine President Cristina Fernandez has thyroid cancer and will undergo surgery next month, her government said on Tuesday, adding that the cancerous cells had not spread.

Fernandez, 58, was easily elected to a second four-year term in October, vowing to deepen her unorthodox policies despite complaints from business leaders who say her heavy-handed management of the economy is stifling investment.

Fernandez was diagnosed with a papillary carcinoma that has not metastasized, said her spokesman, Alfredo Scoccimarro. The operation is scheduled to take place on January 4 and she is expected to take a leave of absence until January 24.

"The thyroid gland will have to be removed," said Buenos Aires-based cancer specialist Julio Moreno. "The prognosis is very good. The chances of being cured are 90 to 98 percent."

The cancer was detected last week during a routine check. Papillary carcinoma is the most common type of thyroid cancer and normally affects people under the age of 40, especially women.

A skilled orator fond of glamorous clothes, high heels and make-up, Fernandez still wears black as she mourns her husband and closest advisor, former President Nestor Kirchner, who died late last year.

When Kirchner died, many thought it spelled the end of the couple's idiosyncratic blend of state intervention, nationalist rhetoric and the championing of human rights in grains exporting powerhouse Argentina, the world's No. 3 soybean supplier.

But Fernandez pulled off a remarkable comeback on the back of a brisk economic expansion and an outpouring of public sympathy. She was re-elected with 54 percent of the vote, promising to stay true to her policies despite objections from Wall Street and international investors.

Latin America's No. 3 economy is growing at nearly 9 percent a year. But a worsening global economic outlook combined with entrenched high inflation at home are seen reining in Argentina's growth to about 4 percent next year.

Fernandez is one of several Latin American leaders to have cancer. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez underwent chemotherapy earlier this year while Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo's lymphatic cancer is in remission.

And former Brazilian leader Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is being successfully treated for a cancerous tumor on his Larynx, according to his doctors.

Mutation in gene that's critical for human development linked to arrhythmia

ScienceDaily (Dec. 27, 2011) ? The biologic and genetic mechanisms controlling the formation and function of the CCS are not well understood, but new research with mice shows that altered function of a gene called Tbx3 interferes with the development of the CCS and causes lethal arrhythmia.

Arrhythmia is a potentially life-threatening problem with the rate or rhythm of the heartbeat, causing it to go too fast, too slow or to beat irregularly. Arrhythmia affects millions of people worldwide.

The cardiac conduction system (CCS) regulates the rate and rhythm of the heart. It is a group of specialized cells in the walls of the heart. These cells control the heart rate by sending electrical signals from the sinoatrial node in the heart's right atrium (upper chamber) to the ventricles (lower chambers), causing them to contract and pump blood.

The biologic and genetic mechanisms controlling the formation and function of the CCS are not well understood, but new research with mice shows that altered function of a gene called Tbx3 interferes with the development of the CCS and causes lethal arrhythmia.

In a study published in the Dec. 26, 2011, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences early edition, researchers led by the University of Utah showed the CCS is extremely sensitive to levels of Tbx3. Mouse embryos with Tbx3 levels below a critical threshold suffered arrhythmia and couldn't survive. As the levels of Tbx3 were increased, mice survived to birth, but as adults they developed arrhythmias or had sudden death.

Tbx3 dysfunction merits further investigation as a cause of acquired and spontaneous arrhythmias, says Anne M. Moon, M.D., Ph.D., adjunct professor of pediatrics at the U of U School of Medicine and corresponding author on the study. "The cardiac conduction system is very sensitive to Tbx3," Moon says. "Tbx3 is required for the conduction system to develop, mature, and then continue to function properly."

The Tbx3 protein, which is a transcription factor encoded by the TBX3 gene, has been linked to heart development, but its role is not yet clearly defined. Moon and her colleagues, including first author Deborah U. Frank, M.D., Ph.D., U assistant professor of pediatrics, found that slight alterations in the structure of the Tbx3 gene alter the level of the protein in mice. When this happens, it can impair the electrical signal in the sinoatrial node and block the atrioventricular node, which conducts electrical signals from the atria to the ventricles. The result is lethal arrhythmias in embryonic and adult mice.

This discovery has implications for the potential to regenerate functional heart tissue, according to Moon. "There's a big effort to regenerate heart muscle," she says. "But if the muscle can't conduct electrical signals, it's not going to do any good; we also need to be able to regenerate conduction tissues to regulate that muscle."

Arrhythmia is not the first problem related to mutations in the TBX3 gene. In humans, TBX3 mutations have been shown to cause limb malformations in people with ulnar-mammary syndrome, an inherited birth disorder characterized by abnormalities of the bones in the hands and forearms and underdeveloped sweat and mammary glands.

In her future research, Moon wants to discover specifically how Tbx3 regulates the behavior of cells in the cardiac conduction system and whether cells that don't have enough Tbx3 die or turn into some other kind of cells.

"It turns out that Tbx3 is a lot more important in the heart than we realized," Moon says.

Researchers at the University of Amsterdam, University of Washington, and New York University also contributed to the study.

FCC approves mysterious Archos DECT device, may or may not be secret death ray

It's amazing, it's mysterious and it's hard to say exactly what it does. On Friday, the FCC passed a device described as "a handset of internet tablet with DECT," suggesting that the mystery gadget may be some sort of bizarre marriage between a DECT cordless phone and a tablet. Given the "Smart Home Phone" name on the back of the product, the tablet functionality could be used to view contacts and caller data. We'll report additional details as they become available, but until then, the person with the best guess as to what this thing actually does gets the peace of mind of a job well done.

NBA Commish Stern opens season with boos in Dallas

? NBA Commissioner David Stern opened his lockout-delayed season by hearing boos from fans.

Stern was in Dallas for the NBA finals rematch between the Mavericks and Heat, and he was on the court for the start of the Mavs' banner-raising ceremony honoring their first championship. The jeers came as soon as he started speaking, but he quickly turned them into cheers by offering his congratulations to team owner Mark Cuban.

Cuban's often contentious relationship with Stern could've been as much of a reason for the boos as the lockout, which pushed the opener from Nov. 1 to Christmas and cut the season by 16 games.

Cuban and Miami's Mickey Arison were among five owners who voted against the labor deal. Stern downplayed that, hailing the agreement as beneficial to everyone.

A military official says the army is battling al-Qaida-linked militants in a city in the country's south. Islamic militants seized control of Zinjibar and another town several months ago, taking advantage of the uprising against President Ali Abdullah Saleh (AH'-lee ahb-DUH'-luh sah-LEH') to expand their territory.

The official says the army has been shelling militant hideouts. Five soldiers and four militants were killed in today's battle.

Saleh signed a deal last month to transfer power in exchange for immunity from prosecution over the deaths of protesters and corruption during his 33-year rule.

The deal has failed to quell the protests in Yemen, which have recently expanded to include labor strikes, calling for Saleh loyalists to be removed from office and for Saleh to be put on trial. But according to a senior U.S. official, the Obama administration is considering whether to allow Saleh into the United States for medical treatment.

Today, the military says a top general accused of corruption is being replaced after a brief strike by about a 1,000 soldiers. The strikers accuse the general of running his own prison and jailing soldiers even for minor offenses. Some were kept in chains.

Human Birdwings combines Wiimote, smartphone in DIY flying initiative (video)

Somewhere, somehow, the Wright Brothers are smiling. Jarnos Smeets, a mechanical engineer from the Netherlands, has been plugging away on his Human Birdwings project for many, many months now, and his latest breakthroughs are absolutely worthy of a peek. Put simply, the bloke has married an HTC Wildfire S, a Wii remote and bookoodles of software genius in order to create a set of wings that are controlled by a human waving his arms as if to fly. As these things tend to go, it's all better explained in video, two of which are hosted up after the break. There's no capture just yet of Jarnos taking off himself, but at this rate, he'll probably be giving Santa a run for his money around this time next year.

Obesity Linked to Higher Esophageal Cancer Death Rates - Drugs ...

FRIDAY Dec. 23, 2011 -- Obese people who have had surgery to treat esophageal cancer are twice as likely to have a recurrence of the disease or die from cancer within five years as patients of normal weight, according to a new study.

In the study, published in the Dec. 1 issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology, researchers from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., suggested their findings could change the way some doctors treat obese patients with this type of cancer.

The investigators followed 778 people who had surgery for esophageal cancer and found that those who were classified as obese (a body mass index of 30 or higher) had a five-year survival rate of 18 percent. That survival rate jumped to 36 percent among people who were not overweight.

"Obesity is considered a risk factor in the development of this cancer, which is known to be both highly lethal and increasingly common," the study's lead investigator, Dr. Harry Yoon, an oncologist at the Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center, said in a Mayo news release. "But prior to this study, we did not really understand the impact of obesity in this upper gastrointestinal cancer."

The study authors pointed out that their findings applied only to nonsmokers who had their esophagus removed. Yoon added that previous research has linked obesity to greater risk for cancer as well as increased risk of death from other types of tumors because extra weight results in a chronic inflammatory state.

The researchers noted their findings could change the approach they take with obese patients with esophageal cancer.

"As an oncologist, I did not typically speak to my patients about excess body weight as part of their care, because we are more often concerned about weight loss and maintaining proper nutrition, but that may change," said Yoon. "It would be helpful to be able to offer patients some measures that they can take to possibly impact their prognosis."

Political Notes: Hotels for Heroes helps military get a place to stay

EDITOR'S NOTE: Political Notes is a weekly compilation of political news items.

Military members will be able to stay in hotels for free as part of a new Hotels for Heroes program.

Congress passed a law last week, co-sponsored by Maryland Democrats U.S. Rep. C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger and Sen. Ben Cardin, that allows people to donate hotel reward points to members of the military. The bill, which will benefit troops receiving care through the military health system and their families, was included in the National Defense Authorization Act that passed by a vote of 283 - 136 in the House and 86-13 in the Senate.

"The love and support of family is often the best medicine to help a wounded warrior recover from his or her injuries," Ruppersberger said in a statement. "Military families are already facing enormous challenges and should not ever have to worry about how they will afford travel expenses."

Hotels for Heroes is an expansion of the national Hero Miles program that provides free round-trip airfare to wounded warriors recovering at military medical centers, as well as to friends and family visiting them. Flights under the program, created by Ruppersberger in 2003, are made possible through frequent flyer mile donations made by airline passengers.

The program is administered by the Fisher House, a nonprofit organization that opens its homes to military families visiting loved ones at hospitals across the country. Fisher House recently announced it had issued 25,000 tickets over the years.

    33rd Dems

The 33rd District Democratic Club won't meet this month.

The group's next meeting will be at 7 p.m. on Jan. 19 at Perry's Restaurant, 1210 Annapolis Road, Odenton. The speaker will be U.S. Rep. Donna Edwards, representative of the 4th Congressional District.

The club will also hold elections at the meeting. For more information, visit www.33dems.org.

    Bongino endorsement

A Severna Park man running for U.S. Senate has garnered another local endorsement.

Sen. Ed Reilly, R-Crofton, has endorsed former U.S. Secret Service agent Dan Bongino.

Reilly, the state Senate's minority whip, said Bongino can relate to the "average Marylander."

"Dan understands the difficult choices we face in this weak economy," Reilly said in a statement. "His candidacy gives us a chance to turn the page and send someone to Washington who has actually lived a life similar to those he'd be elected to represent."

Bongino, 36, served in the Secret Service for more than a decade in the Presidential Protection Division. An entrepreneur, Bongino has graduate degrees in business administration and psychology.

    Kipke fundraiser

The Friends of Nic Kipke will host a fundraiser from 4:30-6:30 p.m. on Jan. 4 at The Greene Turtle, 20 Magothy Beach Road, Pasadena.

Tickets are $100 each or $125 per couple. Sponsorships are also available: $250 for two tickets and a bronze sponsorship, $500 for four tickets and a silver sponsorship, and $1,000 for six tickets and a gold sponsorship.

Nervous banks stash money with ECB

(AP) ? Banks from the 17 countries that use the euro stashed euro347 billion ($453 billion) overnight with the European Central Bank on Thursday, in another sign that Europe's debt crisis is still putting pressure on the banking system despite massive central bank support.

The figure announced Friday is the highest for 2011, topping euro346.4 billion earlier this month.

Banks use the deposit facility every day in fluctuating amounts to offload cash. The upsurge is a sign of mistrust in the interbank lending market where banks raise operating funds. Heavy use suggests they are depositing money with the central bank at low interest rates because they are afraid to lend it to other banks for fear they won't be paid back.

Europe is suffering from a debt crisis marked by concerns that heavily indebted governments such as Italy may be unable to pay off their bonds. That means trouble for banks because they typically hold government bonds.

The large deposits follows Wednesday's massive central bank credit operation, in which the ECB let banks borrow as much as they wanted for up to 3 years. The credit offer was part of a package of bank support measures announced Dec. 8. As a result 523 banks took euro489 billion, the largest ECB loan operation in the 13-year history of the euro. Another three-year credit offering will be held Feb. 28.

The European Central bank has stepped up lending to banks to help them get through the crisis. Some of the banks are finding it extremely difficult to raise money elsewhere, so the bank steps in as lender of last resort, a typical role for central banks in times of turmoil.

The bank has refused to play the same role for governments by buying large amounts of their bonds, saying they must get their debts under control through their own efforts and not wait for a central bank rescue.

It underlined that stance again on Friday by holding down its purchases of government bonds to only euro19 million. The ECB has been buying government bonds on a limited scale, which has helped drive down the borrowing rates that Italy and Spain face in the bond market.

But it says the program is not infinite and that governments must not rely on central bank efforts to lower their borrowing costs. That must be down, ECB head Mario Draghi says, by getting deficits under control and taking steps to improve growth.

It bought a minimal euro3.36 million last week. That makes two weeks of near-negligible purchases, following euro635 million the week ending Dec. 9 and euro3.66 billion the week ending Dec. 2.

Italian 10-year bond yields remained elevated Friday at 6.90 percent, another sign that the markets remain fearful of a default by the eurozone's third-largest economy. Before the crisis spread to Italy, it was able to borrow at under four percent as recently as October 2010.

European governments are trying to win back the confidence of bond market investors by reducing deficits, a difficult job in a slowing economy. Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti won approval Thursday from the Italian Senate for euro30 billion in additional cutbacks and revenue increases.

Greece is working on a deal to cut its debt by making bondholders accept a bond exchange that would mean a 50 percent reduction in the value of their investments. The bondholders could accept that instead of the larger losses that would come from a disorderly default not agreed in advance.

A top ECB policymaker said in an interview published Friday that the central bank could use its power to create new money to buy financial assets if a deteriorating economy threatens the eurozone with deflation ? falling prices.

Lorenzo Bini Smaghi, who is leaving office next week, was quoted by the Financial Times as saying he saw "no reason" why the bank could not use the technique, called quantitative easing by economists. Both the U.S. Federal Reserve and the Bank of England have used it after lowering interest rates to record low levels and finding that their economies still needed more stimulus.

The ECB's mandate is to provide price stability, so fighting deflation could be consistent with that. At the moment, however, inflation is running at 3.0 percent, well above the ECB's goals of just under 2 percent.

NFL: Last-gasp touchdown seals win for Colts

Published: 6:15PM Friday December 23, 2011 Source: Reuters

The Indianapolis Colts scored a touchdown in the final minute to stun AFC South rivals Houston 19-16 at Lucas Oil Stadium today.

It was the second consecutive win for the Colts, who lost their first 13 games of a miserable season. The Texans (10-5), who have already clinched the division, suffered their second loss in a row.

Colts quarterback Dan Orlovsky connected with Reggie Wayne on a one-yard pass with 19 seconds left to cap an 78-yard, 12 play drive that was aided by two penalties against the Texans.

Houston struggled on offense after scoring their only touchdown on the third play of the game, a nine-yard run by Arian Foster following a fumble by Orlovsky on the opening play.

Drinks and joy as defectors embrace Kim's death (AP)

SEOUL, South Korea ? More than 21,000 North Koreans now live in South Korea. For many, the news of North Korean leader Kim Jong Il's death stirred mixed emotions.

Several interviewed in Seoul by The Associated Press described a burst of joy upon hearing that Kim had died, but also a surge of unease over the fate of relatives and friends and even a shadow of homesickness.

There was celebration ? one man had drinks with a friend_ and hope for a better future for their homeland. For one woman, there was sadness as she envisioned little girls cramming to memorize the Kims' feats.

South Korea is no paradise for the defectors either; facing prejudice and lacking job skills, they rarely feel welcomed by their capitalist brethren.

Here, in their own words, are what three of them had to say:

    ___

    THE PAINTER

"I felt rather calm after hearing of Kim Jong Il's death," said Song Byeok, 42, a painter who learned his art drawing propaganda posters in North Korea. "I thought to myself about him: 'You, too, are human in the end.'

"It was his destiny. He couldn't avoid it. ... He was praised like a god, but in the end, he was only a human who fell like an autumn leaf."

Desperate for food in 2000, Song and his father tried to cross the river into China ? not to defect but just to get something to eat from relatives on the Chinese side.

He still believed Kim Jong Il was a good leader.

However, when his father was swept away by the current and drowned, border guards ignored Song's pleas to help rescue him; instead they beat Song up and detained him. The experience convinced him to leave for good in 2002.

"I thought to myself after hearing Kim died that a wind of democratization may finally blow in North Korea," he said. "Reforms may come because Kim Jong Il has died.

"Kim Jong Un is young and he may lean toward reforms. But I still think he may not last long because he's too inexperienced. He only had a year or so to be groomed as successor.

"It may have been better for him if Kim Jong Il had lasted longer."

Song Byeok is the name he paints under and is widely known by in South Korea; he refused to divulge his real name for fear of retaliation against relatives and friends still in North Korea.

    ___

    THE STUDENT

"I believed North Korea was the best country in the world," said Lee Hyeon-seo, who was 13 when late President Kim Il Sung, father of Kim Jong Il, died in 1994.

"I really believed in the theory of self-reliance," she said.

"When Kim Il Sung died, I saw many foreign guests crying on TV, which made me feel like Kim Il Sung was a god," she said. "But as days passed, I felt I wasn't as sad as I was supposed to when I stood in front of his statue.

"Everybody was crying but I couldn't cry, so I dabbed my face with my spit. It was a hot day, and some girl fainted and was sent to a hospital."

Lee, now 30, fled the North in the mid-1990s and lived for a decade in China before moving to South Korea in 2008. Now she studies Chinese at the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in Seoul.

"I remember the propaganda education vividly even though I was a girl," she said. "In North Korea, excelling at math or English is less important than being good at the history of Kim Il Sung's revolutionary steps. Now I know it's fake, but we had to cram as much of the history in our heads as possible. We struggled to get high marks on the subject in school.

"I used to believe unification was a pipe dream. But now it may be possible. I'm hearing from friends that they'd like to be invited to my house in North Korea if the Koreas are reunified."

    ___

    THE ACTIVIST

"I know a person's death is usually something that shouldn't be celebrated, but this time it was completely different," said Kim Seung-cheol, 50.

"Kim's death meant that North Korea would start changing," he said. "It was a hopeful sign for a change."

Kim went out with a friend to celebrate over sausages and "soju," a popular Korean liquor. They laughed with joy.

When he defected 20 years ago, he left behind his wife and son.

"If unification happens, I would like to find out if my son is still alive," he said. "If I find him, I will ask him to hit me for leaving him.

"And if I'm reunited with my wife, I will sing a song out of joy. But I have to ask forgiveness of her, because I've married another woman here in South Korea.

"I've pretty much given up on trying to find my son. It's important he be alive though," he said. "I only hope he is not living a miserable life as a vagabond.

"I hope South Korea can start engaging North Korea. A conciliatory gesture may be needed to open up North Korea. Seoul should send a message to Pyongyang that South Korea wants to go together with the new leadership in North Korea."
