Facebook revamps Messenger iOS app with Favorites, new chat UI, better performance

Facebook's been on a bit of a roll with iOS development lately. Just over a month ago, the company released a major update to its flagship app that offered tangible boosts in performance and responsiveness. Yet Facebook has also steadily worked to improve its standalone projects like Messenger. The latest version of the messaging app, introduced yesterday, brings full support for iOS 6 and Apple's iPhone 5. It also features the same interface changes that recently arrived on the Android release.

Swiping in from the left side of your screen will bring up a list of available contacts, and like before, the app will tell you when each of your friends was last active on Facebook. The conversation view has been given a fresh makeover with chat bubbles, and you're now able to pin those you chat with most often to a Favorites section.

Unfortunately there's one area where Messenger for iOS hasn't reached parity with its Android counterpart: there's no way of integrating your SMS messages within the app. That feature remains exclusive to select Android handsets and we don't expect to see it appear on iOS anytime soon due to the platform's sandboxing restrictions. Even so, the above improvements combined with speed optimizations should make for a worthwhile update. The latest version of Facebook Messenger is available for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch in the App Store now.

Accused Colorado gunman made threats to psychiatrist

DENVER (Reuters) - Accused Colorado gunman James Holmes made threats to a university psychiatrist before a July shooting rampage at a suburban Denver screening of a Batman movie that killed 12 people, according to court documents released on Friday.

The University of Colorado psychiatrist reported those unspecified threats to campus police before the shooting at a midnight screening of "The Dark Knight Rises," a court document filed a week after the shooting and unsealed on Friday showed.

Holmes, a former neuroscience graduate student, has been charged with murder and attempted murder over the rampage, one of the worst outbursts of U.S. gun violence in recent years. In addition to those who died, 58 people were wounded.

University psychiatrist Lynne Fenton, who has testified that she treated Holmes, 24, more than a month before the July 20 shooting, has said her professional relationship with Holmes ended in mid-June.

"The relationship was terminated after the defendant made threats towards who reported the matter to the University of Colorado (CU) police department," the newly unsealed documents said.

"As a result of these actions, university administration terminated the defendant's access privileges to all or part of the Anschutz campus," the documents said.

The documents said the threats were made to a university psychiatrist, but they were heavily redacted, and Fenton's name does not appear in the document.

Prosecutors have depicted Holmes as a young man whose once promising academic career was in tatters as he failed graduate school oral board exams in June and one of his professors suggested he may not have been a good fit for his competitive Ph.D. program.

They have said that Holmes lost his access to the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus after making unspecified threats to a professor on June 12, after which he began a voluntary withdrawal from his program.

    ARSENAL OF GUNS

Other court documents among the 57 unsealed on Friday give more insight into a notebook that Holmes mailed to Fenton the day before the massacre.

Prosecutors expressed frustration with a published report saying the notebook was "full of details about how he was going to kill people," and included "drawings and illustrations of the massacre," according to one document.

That information, given to Fox News from an unidentified law enforcement source, violated Holmes' doctor-patient privilege, prosecutors argued in the July 25 document.

Prosecutors said Holmes began "a detailed and complex plan" to commit murder and obtain an arsenal of guns and protective armor after he was denied access to campus facilities.

Holmes' attorney Daniel King, who analysts have said appears to be laying the groundwork for a possible insanity defense, has said his client suffers from an unspecified mental illness and had tried to get help before the shooting.

Previous media reports have said Fenton reported her concerns about Holmes to a campus threat assessment team and a campus police officer.

Obesity-related hormone discovered in fruit flies

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? Researchers have discovered in fruit flies a key metabolic hormone thought to be the exclusive property of vertebrates. The hormone, leptin, is a nutrient sensor, regulating energy intake and output and ultimately controlling appetite. As such, it is of keen interest to researchers investigating obesity and diabetes on the molecular level. But until now, complex mammals such as mice have been the only models for investigating the mechanisms of this critical hormone. These new findings suggest that fruit flies can provide significant insights into the molecular underpinnings of fat sensing.

"Leptin is very complex," said Akhila Rajan, first author on the paper and a postdoctoral researcher in the lab of Norbert Perrimon, James Stillman Professor of Developmental Biology at Harvard Medical School. "These types of hormones acquire more and more complex function as they evolve. Here in the fly we're seeing leptin in its most likely primitive form."

These findings will be published September 28 in Cell.

In order for an organism to function normally under varying conditions, its organ systems must learn to maintain a steady state, or "homeostasis." Coordinating food intake and nutrient stores with energy requirements is a key homeostatic mechanism referred to as energy homeostasis. Leptin regulates energy homeostasis by linking the organism's fat stores with caloric intake. It is the hormone that tells the brain, "You've had enough."

Researchers have known for the better part of a decade that molecules secreted by the fruit fly's fat tissue communicate such nutrition status reports throughout the fly's entire body. However, they have not known the identity of these molecules, or the nature of the signals they transmit. Rajan hypothesized that this signaling molecule most likely resembles the leptin hormone in humans, since flies and mammals share similar nutrient-sensing pathways.

Researchers had predicted that three molecules in flies were likely to be structurally similar to leptin. When Rajan knocked out one of them, a protein called Upd2, the flies behaved, on a metabolic level, as though they were starving -- despite consuming their normal caloric content.

"Since leptin is a nutrient sensor, this makes sense," said Rajan. "If you knock out the molecule that senses nutrients, the body thinks there are no nutrients. Blocking this molecule copied the phenotype of starvation."

Further tests showed that when flies were actually starving, levels of Upd2 went down, and when they received adequate nutrition, levels went up. This provided further evidence that, like leptin, Upd2 is a nutrient sensor.

Next, the researchers found that Upd2 uses a neural circuit similar to that of leptin to traffic nutrition information between the brain and fat tissue. When Upd2 reaches the brain, it regulates insulin secretion, in effect "telling" the fly to store nutrition and expend energy on growth.

Finally, Rajan and colleagues engineered a fly that lacked Upd2 altogether and inserted the human leptin gene in its place. The fly fully incorporated this mammalian molecule, and all normal nutrient-sensing functions resumed.

"The key significance here is that we can now take full advantage of the sophisticated genetic tool kit available in fly genetics to address profoundly complex questions pertaining to leptin biology," said Perrimon. "This is good news to scientists studying obesity at the molecular level."

Interestingly, the amino acid sequence of leptin diverges from that of Upd2. However, the proteins produced by each gene share many structural similarities. "There are very few examples of this in the literature," Perrimon said.

"Now that we've identified Upd2 as a fly's nutrient sensor and have begun to work out the brain circuitry, the next step is to go deep into the mechanisms," added Rajan.

This research was funded by the National Institutes of Health, grants 5P01CA120964 and 5R01DK088718.

Amid deadlock at the UN, world powers to urge Syria's opposition to unite to end conflict

Western nations and allies in the Middle East meet Friday to urge Syria's fractured opposition to unite, seeking a new path for ending the country's conflict amid deadlock between major powers on the U.N. Security Council.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was hosting talks among the Friends of Syria ? a coalition which includes the United States, the European Union and the Arab League ? on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly, seeking to encourage better co-operation among groups which oppose Syrian President Bashar Assad.

The talks, which don't include Russia, China or Iran, take place with the Security Council at a stalemate on efforts to halt the 18-month long conflict, which activists say has led to more than 30,000 deaths.

Russia and China have vetoed three Western-backed resolutions aimed at pressuring Assad to end the violence and enter negotiations on a political transition, paralyzing the U.N.'s most powerful body and denting chances of any progress during the General Assembly.

Clinton has decried Assad's "murdering of his own people," while Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov ? who will address the General Assembly on Friday ? has accused the U.S. and other countries of encouraging terrorism in their stance on Syria.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius has said it is "shocking" that the Security Council had been unable to act, while British Prime Minister David Cameron denounced the deaths of Syrian children as "a stain on those who have failed to stand up to these atrocities," a reference to Russia and China.

Britain's Middle East minister Alistair Burt said Thursday that Friday's meeting would seize on tentative signs that Syria's opposition is becoming more willing to work together. "What we hear is that they do understand the need to make more progress themselves," he said.

"Our message has been consistent," Burt added. "No-one is asking them to form a unified, single party ? but to have a clear set of objectives addressed towards minorities and the people of Syria as to what they would do."

Iranian leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Wednesday that he was developing a 12-nation group to work on developing a solution to Syria's crisis, but declined to say which countries may be involved or what steps the body might take.

Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi has also invited Iran, Turkey and Saudi Arabia to join a contact group aimed at ending the conflict, though the Saudis have not yet participated. Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal was addressing the General Assembly on Friday.

"We don't want to close any options off that might be helpful in the process, but we struggle to understand how someone so involved in supporting the regime, and therefore perpetuating the cycle of violence, can be part of the answer," Burt said, referring to Ahmadinejad.

Libya's new Prime Minister Mustafa Abu-Shakour and foreign ministers of Germany and South Korea are also scheduled Friday to address the General Assembly.

Honey Boo Boo worries she's too 'chunky'

    TLC

    Alana "Honey Boo Boo" Thompson.

    By Us Weekly

Alana "Honey Boo Boo" Thompson has long wowed audiences during her time as a pageant princess on TLC's "Toddlers & Tiaras," but on Wednesday's season finale of her spinoff, "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo," the precocious 7-year-old had to be coaxed to even get on stage.

"Mama, I think I'm a little chunky today," Honey Boo Boo moaned at Georgia's Miss Sparkle and Shine Pageant as June Shannon and other handlers helped suit her up in her new pink frock. "You have to stay away from those chicken nuggets," her mother replied, as both worried that the velcro keeping Honey Boo Boo's ill-fitting dress together would come apart on stage.

    PHOTOS: Celebrity beauty queens

Reasoned one of Honey Boo Boo's sisters prior to her performance: "Alana's not your average pageant person. Most of the girls are like twigs. She's more of a log... or a boulder."

Later, once Honey Boo Boo summoned her internal "chicken nugget power" and took the stage to show off her new dress -- and false teeth "flipper" -- all her pre-show worry was forgotten. "Once she gets into pageant mode she becomes a different child," Shannon beamed from the audience, where she sat alongside her daughters, partner Mike "Sugar Bear" Thompson and his brother, Lee, whom Honey Boo Boo dubbed "Uncle Poodle."

VIDEO: Eww! June takes a bath in her own sweat on the show's finale

Though she missed out on the pageant's Ultimate Grand Supreme title, Honey Boo Boo was awarded the People's Choice prize -- and was surprised with a visit from her beloved former pet pig, Glitzy! "I'm the people's favorite! I think I did my best ever!" Honey Boo Boo said after her win, confirming that "(she's) the Grand Supreme of my family!"

Honey Boo Boo's family welcomed a new addition on Wednesday's finale, when her sister, Anna (aka "Chickadee") finally gave birth to baby Kaitlyn. "I'm so excited I'm about to piss all over myself," Honey Boo Boo said before Anna brought her new baby home. Honey Boo Boo's eloquent first impression of her niece: "Baby Kaitlyn is so tiny...? I poop bigger!"

VIDEO: Honey Boo Boo says she wants "thousands" of her own kids

Though Sugar Bear reasoned that one of baby Kaitlyn's hands -- that has two thumbs -- reminded him of a "Swiss army knife," his daughter Honey Boo Boo looked on the bright side. "I wish I had an extra finger, then I could grab more cheese balls!" she said.?

A matrix of corporate money funds small business organization NFIB ...

The National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) styles itself as the ?Voice of Small Business,? but it might be better to characterize them as just another megaphone for big business?for the corporate and wealthy elite.

An ALEC Exposed-style website, NFIB Exposed, has popped up to reveal the big corporate money behind NFIB. As noted by the Center for Media & Democracy (CMD), NFIB is bombarding the 2012 election with money and is the lead plaintiff against the Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as ?Obamacare.? NFIB Exposed aims to reveal the forces behind the small business organization.

For example, NFIB received $3.7 million from Karl Rove?s Crossroads GPS, which overwhelmingly supports Republicans; even though 32% of small business owners identify as Democrat and 29% identify as Independent or other, according to a poll commissioned by American Express OPEN in 2009.

After Crossroads GPS, Donors Trust, a fund set up for rich Republicans, is the next most significant donor, contributing $1.5 million to NFIB (for the 2012 election cycle). Donors Trust also heavily contributes to the Koch Brothers? Americans for Prosperity. Indeed, Donors Trust throws big money at a variety of other groups that then contribute money to candidates, lobbies, non-profits and various other forms of legalized bribery.

As Mother Jones reported in July:??Few among the legions of small business owners that it represents will benefit from its lobbying. Only 3 percent of small businesses net more than $250,000 a year, the lowest income that would be affected by Obama?s tax plan. This is one reason why a variety of rival small business groups now accuse the NFIB of doing exactly what it was founded to prevent: selling out small business owners to benefit the rich and powerful.?

?NFIB has spent an unknown, but significant, amount of money and institutional cach? fighting common sense proposals to give workers the right to earn sick time,? notes NFIB Exposed. ?However, a recent small business survey by NFIB found that providing mandatory sick and family leave was not a critical concern of NFIB members.? NFIB Exposed points to NFIB?s own study, which found that opposition to mandatory family or sick leave ranked 64 out of 75 amongst the organizations concerns.

The strategy here is: use NFIB to hoodwink Americans into believing that the majority of small business owners support the GOP. Indeed, the NFIB is simply a funnel for the wealthy?s money?a place where money can criss-cross in a confusing matrix, and give corporations and wealthy individuals some small business legitimacy.

It?s a smokescreen and NFIB Exposed is certainly helping to lift the veil on the group?s subversive machinations.

(Note the photo above, in which?NFIB President and CEO Dan Danner shakes hands with ?Guardian of Small Business? Rep. Chip Cravaack, a Minnesota Republican. It pays to have friends in Congress.)

Payday Loans As Financial Aids | welcome to thinkiatrywebinar.com

    Posted on September 25, 2012

Most people just cannot fathom the fact that loans are not as much of a financial burden as they were considered before. Granted, conventional loans are still quite strict and most companies and lenders will still not allow you to loan small amounts of cash for personal use, and believe me, some lenders will even try to persuade you to thinking that you need to go with a bigger loan with a much more substantial amount of cash. However, that is no true, and believe me, if you do need money, you might want to consider payday loans.

Before even thinking about applying for one though, I do recommend thinking about its consequences first and that you must make sure that you have visited websites like Loanspayday.com so that you know exactly what you are up against when taking a payday loan. Yes, I recommend doing research online first, especially since most lenders might skip on some details, and believe me, when it comes to payday loans, every detail counts, and you may want to have as much information on these types of loans as possible.

That said, after you have done research, I assume that you already know the benefits of getting a payday loan and how it may hurt you financially. Yes, I know, it will set you back for a couple of weeks or months, and that payday loans really do have interest rates that may make you want to think twice. But, fact is, as long as you make use of the money properly and if it is for an emergency, then, there is technically no reason why you should not think of going for a payday loan.

Besides, payday loans are definitely something that can be used in more ways than you can possibly imagine, so, I do recommend getting one. Plus, if it helps, you can apply for a payday loan online, which should not make it take a lot of time and it definitely bodes well for you if you do not want to leave the confines of your house or do not have the time to do so.

Children's tablet maker suing Toys R Us over Tabeo design

Currently lawsuits are all the rage in the tech industry, however it's somewhat of a sad day when the ill-effects of corporate hardball trickle down to children's toys. Nabi tablet maker Fuhu filed a lawsuit at a San Diego, California federal court claiming that mega retailer Toys R Us stole its product's trade secrets for the development of its forthcoming Tabeo tablet for children. Fuhu alleges that last year Toys R Us agreed to exclusively carry the Nabi tablet in order to gain access to confidential information before launching a tablet of its own. The partnership between the two companies ended in January and Toys R Us has since announced its plans to release its Tabeo tablet this fall. Fuhu is suing for an undisclosed sum and requesting that Toys R Us relinquish its stock of Tabeo tablets. It's too early to tell if this lawsuit will have an impact on the Tabeo's launch plans, but if Fuhu has its way, Toys R Us will receive a lump of coal and a court order this holiday season. Bah, humbug!

Without National Cybersecurity Act, State Breach Notification Laws ...

I can think of no area that needs federal oversight more than the cyberspace arena, and by default, cybersecurity. Why? Because cyberspace doesn?t rest comfortably within the borders of one state or another. Everything is national; everything is global ? or so it seems.

But as Congress continues to muddle around with drafting cybersecurity legislation that makes sense for the country as a whole, we are still dependent on state rules and regulations, particularly on data breach notification. And, this being the states, all of which do their own thing regardless of what anyone else is doing, we have a patchwork quilt of laws that can ? and do ? affect people who don?t live in those states where the businesses they utilize are located.

Here?s a question: Do you know the breach notification laws for your state? Do you know if they are strict or lax or if your state even has them? Do you know how these laws work across state lines? Did you know that 4 states have yet to enact a date breach notification law ? Kentucky, Alabama, New Mexico and South Dakota ? or that Virginia?s compliance laws are the strictest?

The researchers at Imation created a Compliance Heat Map that depicts the "strictness of data breach laws and resulting penalties for breaches by state." The Compliance Heat Map provides a visual snapshot of the strictness of regulations by state, using a color scale ranging from light yellow (less strict) to dark red (more strict). In a release, David Duncan, director of software and security solutions at Imation, explained it:

What the compliance heat map tells us is that data security needs to be at top of mind for all IT pros, as there are rules in place for nearly all states and territories and non-compliance could mean serious penalties. Yet, companies also are challenged by explosive data growth and state and federal requirements that mandate active archiving, long-term retention and accessibility of that data. Businesses need resources to help navigate laws and develop secure and scalable infrastructures for data storage and protection.

I was also curious about how these breach laws work across state lines, so I asked Duncan. He told me:

In the state data breach notification regulations, the general criteria is that a consumer is a resident of a specific state.? The laws of the 49 states where a consumer does not live do not apply. It is the businesses? responsibility to notify the state in which a customer is a resident ? based on the information that the company has of a consumer?s location.

So, it sounds to me that a customer who lives in Pennsylvania but whose personal information sits on a computer system in New York doesn?t have to be notified if there is a breach of that New York system. And if they do notify your state, will the state actually notify you? It?s all very shady. How much thought do businesses give to reaching out to everyone involved in a breach, especially smaller companies? After all, smaller companies are more likely to be hit with a breach.

I think the heat map makes a good case for the necessity of a solid national law. So I asked Duncan what his wish list would be for that national law. He thinks a national law should consist of the following:

    • The loss of personal information (e.g., such as a device that is misplaced but is not known to be lost or stolen constitute a data breach)
    • The minimum threshold for when consumers should be notified
    • The threshold that would result in a different notification or remediation requirement (e.g. credit reporting service),
    • The time allotted for the notification process,
    • Consistent requirements for federal, state and local agency reporting and notification, and
    • A uniform set of penalties

What do you think? Do the breach laws on a state level work or do we need something more consistent on a national level?

(AP) ? Mike Munchak has been a player or coach in the NFL for more than 30 years. His Tennessee Titans and the Detroit Lions turned in a game chock full of plays that compares to nothing he has ever seen before.

The Titans became the first NFL team to score five touchdowns of 60 yards or longer in one game, two on special teams and a third when Alterraun Verner simply pried the ball away from Brandon Pettigrew before running it 72 yards for a TD.

The Lions scored 14 points in the final 18 seconds of regulation to force overtime ? the first team to do that in league history.

Tackles Jurrell Casey and Sen'Derrick Marks stopped backup quarterback Shaun Hill short on fourth-and-1 at the Tennessee 7 for a 44-41 overtime win Sunday ? a victory the previously winless Titans desperately needed.

"I think hopefully that we learned that no matter what happens in the game, the highs and lows, it's never over," Munchak said.

If all the big plays and scoring surges weren't enough, suspect officiating added to the mayhem on a day when the Titans (1-2) led 20-9 at halftime only to fall behind 27-20 when Detroit scored 18 straight points before Tennessee countered with 21 in a span of 5 minutes, 25 seconds.

Several of the Lions had started taking the tape off their fingers when backup Shaun Hill, in for the injured Matthew Stafford, helped Detroit score twice in the final 18 seconds to force overtime.

"That was definitely a roller coaster," Lions defensive end Cliff Avril said. "Never been a part of that. Crazy. You're down 14 with a few minutes to go, and then the next thing you know you're back in the game. It was definitely crazy."

The Lions (1-2) lost their second straight after miscommunication led to the final play of the game instead of what could have been Jason Hanson's fifth field goal. Rob Bironas kicked his third field goal, a 26-yarder, to put Tennessee ahead to stay after a drive that got its own boost from the officials.

They announced a replay review had overturned their ruling of a catch by Tennessee tight end Craig Stevens, with the ball hitting the ground as he rolled after being hit helmet to helmet by Lions linebacker Stephen Tulloch. After spending several minutes discussing where to place the ball, they put it at the Lions' 29, giving the Titans 27 yards. The penalty apparently was marched off from the Detroit 44 instead of the Tennessee 44, where the play started.

"Obviously, there was a miscommunication, or I don't know what you call it, from an enforcement standpoint," Detroit coach Jim Schwartz said.

The Lions went right back down the field until the Titans stopped Mikel Leshoure on third down about a foot shy of the first down at the Tennessee 7. The Lions lined up, and Schwartz said they wanted to try and draw the Titans offside before he called a timeout. Instead, Hill took the snap, and Casey and Marks drove the Lions backward for a 1-yard loss.

"The crowd was loud," Schwartz said. "If they didn't jump, we were just going to take the timeout. The ball ended up getting snapped. We needed that, obviously, to make sure all 11 guys get the calls right there and be able to play it."

    Hill took the blame.

"It's up to the quarterback to get all 11 on the same page, for sure," Hill said. "I'll just leave it at that. It was on me."

The Titans immediately started celebrating as both teams walked to the middle of the field exhausted after a game that went 3 hours, 51 minutes. But an official stood over the ball where it had been marked, and the replay official reviewed the final play one last time before the referee announced the ruling was upheld and the game was over.

That finally left Jake Locker a winner as a starter on a day he threw for 378 yards with two touchdowns, including a 71-yarder to Nate Washington, who plucked the ball almost off the back of Lions cornerback Jacob Lacey on his way to the end zone during that 21-point outburst late in the fourth quarter.

The finish was so frantic it nearly overshadowed a touchdown mimicking the most famous play in Titans history, the Music City Miracle to lift them past Buffalo in a January 2000 playoff game. Tommie Campbell caught a lateral from Darius Reynaud on a punt return and ran it 65 yards for a TD in the first quarter for Tennessee.

Reynaud had never thrown a pass in a game going back to high school, and he scored his own TD on a franchise-record 105-yard kickoff return that tied the game at 27. Jared Cook also caught a 61-yard TD pass in the second quarter from Locker.

The Titans had their chances to win in regulation. Verner picked off a Hill pass that was wiped out by a roughing-the-passer penalty on linebacker Akeem Ayers before Hill found Calvin Johnson for a 3-yard TD on the next play. The Lions then recovered an onside kick.

Hill threw a short pass to the sideline to Nate Burleson, who took at least a step before losing the ball when hit by Titans cornerback Jason McCourty. An official threw down his bean bag, indicating a change of possession. Verner picked up the ball and started to run to the end zone before another official ran up and called it incomplete.

Because it was in the final 2 minutes, a review is left up to the officials and coaches cannot challenge. No replay review was done, but the Titans' defense finally made sure those miscues didn't hurt them.

"It's definitely one that I'll never forget for my first win," Locker said.

Notes: Stafford left after pulling up limping on Verner's TD return with what the Lions called a strain muscle. Stafford threw for 278 yards and a TD, and he said he's not fast enough to pull anything. Hill threw for 172 yards in his relief duty. ... Leshoure ran for 100 yards in his NFL debut. The Lions running back missed his rookie season with an Achilles' tendon injury and was suspended for the first two games of this season. ... The Titans also scored two TDs on punt return and or kickoff return for the first time in the same game.

Tips for Raising Happy Children | Toddler Times

Running 300x199 On the Bittersweet Passage of TimeIn my house we have an afternoon tradition: each day after preschool my 3 and 5 year old stop at the end of our front walk while I continue on to the house. As soon as I?ve reached the porch I turn around to face them, oversized backpacks dwarfing their tiny frames.

On your mark, get set, GO! I yell. The two of them come galloping toward me like miniature thoroughbreds out of the gate. Whoever reaches me first calls, I WIN! I got to Mommy first! I get to pick the dessert!

It?s a silly childhood tradition whose origin I can?t recall, but it?s become part of the rhythm of our family?s life. I have to wonder, though, will they remember it?

One of the most difficult concepts for me to wrestle with as a parent is this: that until my children are at least three and a half, it?s unlikely that they?ll remember anything about their lives. It?s called ?childhood amnesia,? the blank slate of early childhood.

So that trip we took to Disney World this summer? Only my 9 year old will recall the hotel with the awesome water slide and how daddy belly danced that night at Epcot. The memories we?ve made in the house we?re moving out of next month will one day fade away. And their great grandfather who passed away last winter? My younger two will only have our photographs and stories to go by.

It?s a bitter pill to swallow.

I thought of this one recent Sunday morning as I read the New York Times? Motherlode blog. One of my favorite writers, Gretchen Rubin, contributed a great post, ?Why Little Bear Made Me Burst into Tears.? I was intrigued by the title because as a sentimental mama myself, I can certainly relate. But the post wasn?t as much about the emotional grip of children?s literature as it was about the swift passing of time, especially the childhood years.

According to Rubin, ?Remembering happy times in the past is an important way to boost happiness in the present, and children need parents? help to sustain happy memories.? But when their memories haven?t yet fully imprinted in their minds, how can we as parents foster them?

In ?the days since I read her words I?ve been mulling it over a bit. I thought of one of my daughter?s favorite activities: hearing the story of her birth. She certainly can?t remember the day she was born but delights in the story nonetheless. She also loves looking through her baby pictures with me and listening as I give her details.

    This was your favorite toy.

Grandpa?s friend made you that cradle.

I loved the way your brothers made you laugh.

From the huge smile on her face as I tell her these things, I can?t imagine she?d be any happier if she remembered the details herself. Maybe Gretchen Rubin is correct: it?s the parents? job to collect the memories and recount them, to create a solid base for happiness as they grow up.

And I can see her now: my daughter, several years older, with lanky legs and a missing front tooth.

Tell me about when we raced up the walk to you, Mommy.?

Even though she?ll be too big for my lap then, I?ll make a spot for her, pull her close, and tell her how she looked as she ran. Oversized backpack and all.

Mary Lauren Weimer?is a social worker turned mother turned writer. Her blog,?My 3 Little Birds, encourages moms to put down the baby books for a moment and tell their own stories. Connect with her on?Facebook?and?Twitter.

First HTC Windows Phone 8X Video and Image Samples Surface

The camera on the HTC Windows Phone 8X, according to the manufacturer, is one of?eight-megapixels and features a backside illuminated sensor,?f/2.0 at 28mm, and has a dedicated image chip to help with image processing. All of these should play nicely together in generating great images.

Until we can lay our hands on the phone and check for ourselves (and definitely compare to the Nokia Lumia 920), we?re left with images taken by others. Below are just two of what appear the be the first images (and a video) captured by the HTC Windows Phone 8X. You can check out more (and larger versions) by following the gallery link below. The pictures are not very telling but judging by what we see they surely look nice. As far as the video is concerned, it looks like it could need a little bit of image stabilization, something which could turn into a reason to go with the Lumia 920. However, let?s wait for the phone to land in our labs; until then, check out the samples and let us know of your thoughts.

Candy, cereal, cookies: Farmers keep cows going on creative feed alternatives

With the worst drought in recent memory driving corn prices up, farmers have been forced to buy what they can to feed their cows cheaply. Alternatives could be anything from orange peels to marshmallows.?

    By Carey Gillam,?Reuters / September 23, 2012

A cow and its calf are herded into the auction arena at the Springville Feeder Auction Association Aug. in Springville, Ind. Indiana's worst drought in decades is forcing some cattle farmers to sell off cows they can no longer afford to feed as pastures dry up and feed prices soar. Other farmers have found unusual cheap feed alternatives.

    Jeremy Hogan/AP

Mike Yoder's herd of dairy cattle are living the sweet life. With corn feed scarcer and costlier than ever, Yoder increasingly is looking for cheaper alternatives -- and this summer he found a good deal on ice cream sprinkles.

    ' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
    ' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

    '; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

"It's a pretty colorful load," said Yoder, who operates about 450 dairy cows on his farm in?northern Indiana. "Anything that keeps the feed costs down."

As the worst drought in half a century has ravaged this year's US corn crop and driven corn prices sky high, the market for alternative feed rations for beef and dairy cows has also skyrocketed. Brokers are gathering up discarded food products and putting them out for the highest bid to feed lot operators and dairy producers, who are scrambling to keep their animals fed.

In the mix are cookies, gummy worms, marshmallows, fruit loops, orange peels, even dried cranberries. Cattlemen are feeding virtually anything they can get their hands on that will replace the starchy sugar content traditionally delivered to the animals through corn.

"Everybody is looking for alternatives," said?Ki Fanning, a nutritionist with?Great Plains Livestock Consulting?in Eagle,?Nebraska. "It's kind of funny the first time you see it but it works well. The big advantage to that is you can turn something you normally throw away into something that can be consumed. The amazing thing about a ruminant, a cow, you can take those type of ingredients and turn them into food."

    PRICING VARIES

Feed is generally the largest single production expense for cattle operators. Whatever is fed needs to supply energy and protein levels that meet the animals' nutritional needs. High prices for soy has operators seeking alternatives for both corn and soy.

Corn alternatives are in particular demand as supplies are so tight that in some areas of the country, feed corn is not available at any price.

Pricing and availability of the many different "co-products" as they are called, varies from place to place, but buyers report savings of 10 percent to 50 percent.

The savings for operators are shrinking, however, as savvy resellers tie pricing for their alternative offerings to the price of corn, which surged to record highs this summer due to drought damage.

The?U.S. Department of Agriculture?said last month the harvest now underway will yield the smallest corn crop in six years due to the drought that is still gripping more than half of the nation.

"They are using less corn in a number of these rations, but as corn prices go up, prices for really every other co-product go up too," said?Greg Lardy, head of the animal sciences department at?North Dakota State University.

Operators must be careful to follow detailed nutritional analyses for their animals to make sure they are getting a healthy mix of nutrients, animal nutritionists caution. But ruminant animals such as cattle can safely ingest a wide variety of feedstuffs that chickens and hogs can't.

The candy and cookies are only a small part of a broad mix of alternative feed offerings for cattle. Many operators use distillers grains, a byproduct that comes from the manufacture of ethanol. Other common non-corn alternatives include cottonseed hulls, rice products, potato products, peanut pellet.

Wheat "middlings," a byproduct of milling wheat for flour that contain particles of flour, bran, and wheat germ, also are fed.

And every now and then, there is a little chocolate for the hungry cows.

Hansen Mueller Grain out of?Omaha,?Nebraska, who markets chocolate bars alongside oats and peanut pellets, said it all comes down to fat, sugar and energy.

"That's all it is," said?Bran Dill, a spokesman at Hansen Mueller. Demand is high, he said.

But he also said increasing prices are making alternatives less attractive.

"The price of this stuff has gone up so much it's gotten ridiculous," he said.

Making It Easy So You Can Understand How Email Marketing Works ...

Every day, owners of Internet enterprises ponder what will make their sales and profits rise. If this is a question you?re already asking yourself, email marketing is perfect for you! Continue reading to learn how this can benefit your business.

Your newsletter should be sent at certain times of the week, based on what the content is and your reader?s schedules. Pick a weekday for a newsletter that targets business-related issues so your client can make use of it during the regular workweek. If you send out a newsletter that targets families, or one that is devoted to leisure activities, you should mail it on the weekend.

All emails should be proofread before they are sent out. Be certain that anything you send out is grammatically correct. Make sure you test out the format so it will work out and show up on the screen how you had imagined it. Additionally, if you use email links, make sure they aren?t broken.

When sending messages to your email marketing list, make sure to include your brand logo and colors. Your subscribers know your site already and they associate certain colors, logos, and designs with it. Your emails will have a lower chance of being deleted if they are consistent.

Utilize all the subscription information that you gather in order to ease the shopping experience of your customers. Set it up so customers can have all of their subscription information automatically filled in on order forms. This quickens the overall purchase process and will actually cause them to be a more willing buyer.

Use a number of different resources to learn everything that you possibly can about how to successfully utilize email marketing. There is a wealth of information available online about this. You might be able to find local classes in your area to help you learn more about email marketing.

Use passive and active feedback to enhance email marketing efforts. Active feedback is simply asking your readers for opinions and other suggestions they might have. Passive feedback is much more subtle and not noticeable to the reader. This involves tracking which links get clicked the most, where people go once they?ve clicked the links, and how well each email does profit-wise.

When creating your email, write with your customers in mind, not simply to avoid spam bots. When you write proper emails that aren?t too pushy, you won?t have to worry about the spam filters. If you solely focus on using methods that will escape spam filter, your messages will likely be boring and readers will quickly delete them.

Be sure that you test each and every link that you have included in your emails. If any of the links is incorrect or dead, it means a loss of customers and credibility for you. Additionally, it can make your readers lose respect for you and your project.

Send emails to people who are familiar with you and request your notifications. Your emails will appear to be spam to those who are unfamiliar with your company. They?ll consider your email spam, defeating your marketing strategy. This can lead them to just toss your email, which just wasted your time.

Make sure you have permission from the subscriber before you send them emails. When you send out spam, your emails won?t be effective. Some customers will be significantly annoyed and cut the connection with you altogether by bringing their business elsewhere.

Email marketing is a very inexpensive way to boost sales. Creating a campaign isn?t very tough, so there?s no excuse for not having one.
