Computer Technology and Education - Revolutionizing the Classroom

Computer technology has become more and more important for education, as it supports new methods for teaching and students learning. The use of technology, system software and application software, is fully integrated within the educational environment and its use is increasing with the growth in computer literacy. From the use in the classroom or for school work to the use in support of educators and school managers, there are many opportunities for combining technology with education.. Students of all ages incorporate the use of computer technology for information in and outside of school. Computers can be used for word processing, to create spreadsheets, databases, presentations and graphics, as well as to practice students' ability to find, retrieve and process information. Today's students make use of computers both at home and school and computers are found in the classroom for computer-based assignments or labs and at home for homework and leisure activities. This strong relationship between students and computers has had a major impact on the way students learn, collaborate, and practice problem-solving. Computers have helped students increase their productivity, write, save, print and submit work easily and effectively, while the Internet and research tools have opened a new world of possibilities by virtually eliminating any difficulties in finding information.

At a minimum, teachers utilize computers to make handouts, write lesson plans, record and calculate grades. However, they can also make use of computer technology to communicate with their students and create online assignment and activities. Plus, they can track course work and a variety of students' information. Computers not only stimulate learning and support research and communication, they also permit teachers to interact differently with students at anytime, anywhere. For many teachers and students, computer technology is also closely associated with online teaching. Distance learning (D/L), which is computer-based teaching, is one of the greatest benefits of the use of computer technology in education. Distance learning is a valuable option for students who, due to family and work commitments or personal reasons, would have never been able to enroll in traditional college programs. These students are given the chance of furthering their education thanks to the application of computer technology. The future of online teaching looks promising as more and more students are enrolling in courses today than in the past.

Online education is becoming an important long-term strategy for many institutions of higher learning that are basing much of their revenues on it. It is clear then that computer technology has a role in education for both teachers and students - both use it for individual learning, gathering data and accessing computing resources, writing and collaborating with others in and out of the classroom. The revolution of computer technology into the learning environment supports both the educator and students' growth and development. It can also encourage cooperative learning and student collaboration beyond the classroom. Computer technology has also become an asset for education managers as it allows the analysis of a multitude of important data, from students' enrollments and results to teachers' performance. Innovative Architects, for example, has launched software that can be used by schools for teachers' performance management: Ascend Performance Manager. This software is a great manager tool, as it allows school administrators to track data relative to teachers (evaluation data and performance metrics, for example) and make informed decisions. Ascend's Pay for Performance application can calculate teacher's bonuses, while Ascend's Harmony can provide an adaptable data solution across multiple systems in real time. In summary, computer technologies benefit students as well as teachers; it offers many benefits to enhance education. It can strengthen the teaching/learning process, motivate and engage students so they will be interested in learning, or aid to compile teaching activities and resources for students. It can also transform the classroom and create an alternative learning environment for educators and students, which make learning possible at a distance and exciting and convenient for students. As in the case of the Ascend suite, computer technology has also met the performance management needs of educational organizations.
