"Hot in Cleveland" actress Valerie Bertinelli sat down with "The Talk" hosts on Wednesday to share her advice about how she transformed a rocky relationship with her ex, Eddie Van Halen, into an amicable one.
"What you must remember, first and foremost, is that you must love your children more than you hate your ex," she said to a round of applause from the audience. "Because your child doesn?t have a choice in this, your child is stuck in the middle and you cannot treat them like they have to pick mommy or pick daddy -? it?s just wrong."
Bertinelli filed for divorce from the Van Halen guitarist in 2005 after almost 25 years of marriage. The ex-couple -- who are parents to 21-year-old son, Wolfgang -- finalized their split two years later in December 2007.
The actress got remarried in 2011 to longtime boyfriend Tom Vitale and even invited her ex to the ceremony. Bertinelli also attended Van Halen's 2009 wedding to second wife, Janie Liszewski.
But not all Hollywood couples are able to keep things friendly after divorce. Click through the slides below for five celebrity pairs who could take a cue from Bertinelli and Van Halen.
Kris Humphries and Kim Kardashian
In October 2011, Kim Kardashian <a href="http://news-briefs.ew.com/2011/10/31/kim-kardashian-divorce/">filed to divorce</a> basketball player Kris Humphries after just 72 days of marriage. The reality star <a href="http://www.eonline.com/news/272506/it-s-over-kim-kardashian-files-for-divorce-from-kris-humphries-i-have-decided-to-end-my-marriage">said in a statement to E!</a>: "I hope everyone understands this was not an easy decision. I had hoped this marriage was forever, but sometimes things don't work out as planned. We remain friends and wish each other the best."
But their split turned out to be less-than-friendly when Humphries <a href="http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20549809,00.html">filed for an annulment </a>on the basis of fraud in November 2011. Lawyers for both parties have since accused each other of unnecessarily <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/kim-kardashians-divorce-getting-nastier/story?id=17013570#.UGT9Y_mfGRm">dragging out the divorce proceedings</a>, which have lasted far longer than the estranged couple's quickie marriage.
Russell Brand and Katy Perry
In December 2011, Russell Brand <a href="http://www.tmz.com/2011/12/30/katy-perry-divorce-russell-brand/">filed to divorce</a> Katy Perry, after just <a href="http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20436591,00.html">14 months of marriage</a>. In a statement, <a href="http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/russell-brand-katy-perry-divorce-276983">Brand said of the split</a>: "Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage. I'll always adore her and I know we'll remain friends." The split was supposedly so amicable that Perry even signed the divorce docs <a href="http://www.nypost.com/p/pagesix/katy_perry_signs_divorce_docs_with_LGpCpZyGJUbDJ1J2xtplbI">with a smiley face</a>.
And although Brand has <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1689887/russell-brand-katy-perry-divorce-howard-stern.jhtml?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+MTVNewsLatest+%28MTV+News+Latest+Headlines%29&utm_content=Google+Reader">spoken very highly</a> of his now ex-wife, there was <a href="http://www.eonline.com/news/293856/did-katy-perry-slam-russell-brand-during-grammys-performance-see-for-yourself">some speculation</a> that Perry didn't feel the same way. In a <a href="http://www.eonline.com/news/293856/did-katy-perry-slam-russell-brand-during-grammys-performance-see-for-yourself">February 2012 Grammys performance</a>, the pop star changed up the lyrics to her single "Part of Me" to include a reference to her broken marriage: "So you can keep the diamond ring/It don't mean anything/In fact you can keep everything, yeah yeah/Except for me." She later <a href="http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1680321/katy-perry-part-of-me-russell-brand.jhtml">told MTV news</a> that the song was written before they were married (but she didn't explain the changed lyric!)
Heidi Klum and Seal
Heidi Klum and Seal <a href="http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20563766,00.html" target="_hplink">announced their split</a> to much surprise in January 2012. At the time, they released a <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/01/23/seal-heidi-klum-announce-_n_1222724.html?ref=celebrity&ir=Celebrity">joint statement</a> that read: "This is an amicable process and protecting the well-being of our children remains our top priority, especially during this time of transition. We thank our family, friends, and fans for their kind words of support."
But several months later, the supposed "amicable process" turned ugly when Seal <a href="http://www.tmz.com/2012/09/01/seal-heidi-klum-dating-video-bodyguard-divorce-cheating/">told TMZ</a> that he wished his estranged wife would have waited until they were separated before she decided to <a href="http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20626379,00.html">"fornicate with the help,"</a> referring to Klum's relationship with <a href="http://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/news/heidi-klum-yes-im-dating-my-bodyguard-martin-kristen-2012139">bodyguard Martin Kristen</a>. Seal's publicist later <a href="http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20626465,00.html">clarified his statement</a>, insisting that he did not mean to imply that Klum cheated while they were married. Klum denied the allegations <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/12/heidi-klum-seal-divorce-w_n_1878380.html" target="_hplink">in an interview with Katie Couric</a>, calling Seal's comment a "unique choice of words."
Kim Basinger and Alec Baldwin
Kim Basinger <a href="http://www.people.com/people/archive/article/0,,20133526,00.html" target="_hplink">filed to divorce</a> Alec Baldwin in 2001. At the time, <em>People</em> magazine reported that "Friends characterized the split as 'amicable.' Says one, Hamptons restaurateur Colin Ambrose. 'I don't see this as being some really nasty thing.'" Their <a href="http://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/story?id=5832850&page=1#.UGYvm_mfHDW" target="_hplink">divorce was finalized </a>in 2002 after nine years of marriage.
But their <a href="http://www.people.com/people/archive/article/0,,20144854,00.html">bitter custody battle</a> over their daughter Ireland proved to be far from amicable. Baldwin accused his estranged wife of a <a href="http://www.cbsnews.com/2100-207_162-1701338.html">"pathological need"</a> to turn their daughter against him, while Basinger once accused him of having <a href="http://www.people.com/people/archive/article/0,,20144854,00.html">"legendary" behavior problems</a>. After a <a href="http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20035960,00.html">nasty voicemail to his daughter</a> was leaked in 2007, his visitation rights were <a href="http://www.tmz.com/2007/04/22/alecs-threatening-message/">temporarily revoked</a>.
Heather Mills and Paul McCartney
Heather Mills and Paul McCartney <a href="http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/12827984/ns/today-entertainment/t/mccartney-mills-announce-separation/#.UGTg6fmfGRk">called it quits</a> in 2006 after four years of marriage. In a statement <a href="http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2006/may/17/arts.artsnews">announcing their separation</a>, they said: "Our parting is amicable and both of us still care about each other very much but have found it increasingly difficult to maintain a normal relationship with constant intrusion into our private lives, and we have actively tried to protect the privacy of our child."
But as soon as <a href="http://www.people.com/people/archive/article/0,,20186762,00.html">money came into play</a>, it was clear that there was nothing amicable about their parting. During the divorce proceedings, Mills and McCartney hurled accusations at one another -- she <a href="http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/15318251/ns/today-entertainment/t/mills-claims-mccartney-stabbed-abused-her/#.UGT6JvmfGRk">accused him of abuse</a> and sabotaging her career and he accused her of <a href="http://www.people.com/people/archive/article/0,,20186762,00.html">bugging his phone</a>. And in 2008, <a href="http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20184901,00.html">Mills poured a glass of water</a> on McCartney's divorce attorney's head. Despite requesting a <a href="http://www.people.com/people/archive/article/0,,20186762,00.html">$250 million divorce settlement</a>, Mills walked away with a still-handsome $48.6 million.
