The polls are closed for Primary Election Day in Washington state, and voters have chosen which candidates will move onto the general election in November.

With an estimated half of the expected vote counted Tuesday night, State Senator Ed Murray leads the race for Seattle mayor with 30 percent, followed by incumbent Mike McGinn with 27 percent.

"I want to say this four years has been the most extraordinary gift that the people of Seattle have given to me and to my family and to everybody on the mayor's office staff," McGinn told cheering supporters at his campaign headquarters Tuesday night. "You know we get to go into work evey day and try to make the city a better place and we've worked really hard to give a voice to people who didn't have a voice before, worked really hard to make sure everybody had a shot."

Several well-known names had challenged McGinn, including Murray, City Councilman Bruce Harrell and former City Councilman Peter Steinbrueck.

McGinn's opponents say his governing style is divisive and that McGinn has alienated business groups and the state Legislature. McGinn, an attorney and former Sierra Club leader, points to the city's improving economy, increased spending on education programs and his support for more transit options.

King County Proposition 1 Parks Levy

King County Proposition 1, the Parks Levy, is passing with 69 percent of the vote. This levy pays for park maintenance, including the Woodland Park Zoo. It replaces two existing levies about to expire, but also raises rates by about 40 percent. The Parks Levy provides 70 percent of the park system budget.

King County Executive

Dow Constantine is easily advancing in the race for King County Executive. Constantine has 76 percent of the vote. He will face civil engineer Alan Lobdell, who has 12 percent, in the November election.

Seattle School Board District 4

Seattle School Board District 4 includes Ballard, Queen Anne and Magnolia neighborhoods. This is an open seat. Economic consultant Suzanne Dale Estey leads with 48 percent. She will face freelance writer Sue Peters who has 41 percent.

Seattle School Board District 5

Seattle School Board 5, another open seat, includes downtown, Capitol Hill and the Central District. Education policy consultant Stephan Blanford leads with 79 percent. He will run against LaCrese Green, who tutors Ethiopian immigrant children, who garnered 13 percent.
