Massive storm wreaks havoc on presidential race

CELINA, Ohio (AP) ? Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama frantically sought to close the deal with voters with precious few days left in an incredibly close race as this year's October surprise ? an unprecedented storm menacing the East Coast ? wreaked havoc on their best laid plans.

Ever mindful of his narrow path to the requisite 270 electoral votes, Romney looked to expand his map, weighing an intensified effort in traditionally left-leaning Minnesota. Obama sought to defend historically Democratic turf as the race tightened heading into the final week.

Wary of being seen as putting their political pursuits ahead of public safety, the two White House hopefuls reshuffled their campaign plans as the storm approached. Both candidates were loath to forfeit face time with voters in battleground states like Virginia, which is likely to be afflicted when Hurricane Sandy, a winter storm and a cold front collide to form a freak hybrid storm.

"The storm will throw havoc into the race," said Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., noting that a Monday rally in his state with Obama and former President Bill Clinton has already been canceled.

Obama, preparing to depart for Florida a day early to beat the storm, followed up a morning church service with his daughters with a visit to the Federal Emergency Management Agency's headquarters, where the president was briefed before speaking by phone to governors and mayors in affected states. Hours before rainfall was expected to begin, Obama declared a state of emergency in Maryland, freeing up federal funds to aid local response efforts.

"Anything they need, we will be there," Obama said. "And we are going to cut through red tape. We are not going to get bogged down with a lot of rules. We want to make sure that we are anticipating and leaning forward into making sure that we've got the best possible response to what is going to be a big and messy system."

An opportunity for Obama to demonstrate steady leadership in the face of a crisis was offset by the risk that the federal government, as in past emergencies, could be faulted for an ineffective response, with the president left to take the fall.

Obama canceled campaign stops Monday in Virginia and Tuesday in Colorado to monitor the storm but planned to go forward with other events Monday in Florida and Ohio, with Clinton at his side. He planned to return to Ohio on Wednesday with stops in Cincinnati and Akron, followed by a Thursday swing through Springfield, Ohio; Boulder, Colo.; and Las Vegas.

Romney nixed three stops in up-for-grabs Virginia on Sunday, opting instead to campaign with running mate Paul Ryan in Ohio before heading Monday to Wisconsin, where the former Massachusetts governor has chipped away at Obama's lead.

"Let's today when we get home put in our prayers the people who are in the East Coast in the wake of this big storm that's coming," Ryan said in Celina, Ohio.

As Ryan discussed the approaching end of the race, the crowd erupted with chants of "nine more days."

Also vexing to Obama and Romney was the prospect that bad weather could hinder early voting and get-out-the-vote efforts, key components for both campaigns in the waning days of the campaign.

"Obviously, we want unfettered access to the polls, because we think the more people that come out, the better we're going to do," said David Axelrod, a top adviser to Obama's campaign. "To the extent that it makes it harder, that's a source of concern."

Boarding Romney's campaign bus in Dayton, Ohio, Sen. Rob Portman hedged when asked whether the storm could affect turnout in his hotly contested state: "We'll see. On early voting, it might."

Signs of the storm's enormity were quickly mounting. New York City prepared to shut down its mass transit system and ordered some residents to evacuate, while governors from North Carolina to Connecticut declared states of emergency. Airlines canceled more than 3,000 flights in anticipation of the hurricane, which has already killed more than 60 people in the Caribbean.

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, whose state is among the most competitive in the race, said intensive contingency plans would prevent the storm from undermining voters' ability to cast their ballots.

"We've got about 2,000 additional people that are coming into Virginia to help our power suppliers," said McDonnell, a top Romney ally. "The state board of elections is already planning for extended hours in advance for absentee voting, and it's now a priority, moved up to the same level as hospitals and police stations to have power restored."

Getting voters to the polls ? whether early or on Election Day ? is one of the few elements of the race still in the candidates' control with little more than a week left in the race. Although Romney and Obama are in a close contest for the popular vote, the president continues to have the upper hand in the handful of contested states where the victor will be decided. An Associated Press analysis shows Romney has fewer routes than Obama to reach the 270 electoral votes he needs to oust the incumbent, although the Republican has pulled even, or is slightly ahead, in a few pivotal states like Virginia and Florida.

With time running out, both campaigns appeared to be fine-tuning their map of the states where they're campaigning the hardest.

A senior Republican official, speaking on the condition of anonymity to disclose private deliberations, said Sunday that the Romney team was seriously discussing sending Romney, Ryan or both to Minnesota during the final week. The state hasn't gone Republican in the presidential race since 1972, but recent polling shows a tighter race there than most anticipated. Both campaigns are buying TV time in the state, but neither has dispatched a member of the ticket for a public event since Vice President Joe Biden visited in August.

In a flashback to the 2008 race, Obama's campaign announced that Biden will campaign Thursday in Pennsylvania, reprising a visit to his hometown of Scranton that he made during the final week four years ago. Pennsylvania too has been Democratic territory in recent years, but Romney has continued to contest the state, with an advertising assist from the Republican Party.

Eager to show energy and momentum on their side, both teams took to the Sunday talk shows to quibble over which candidate is faring better in state-level efforts to get supporters to the polls.

"Our people are coming out," said Stephanie Cutter, Obama's deputy campaign manager. "Ohio, Florida, the first day of early voting in Florida yesterday ? record numbers of people are coming out to vote. It's something like we've never, ever seen. And that's a sign."

Reince Priebus, the GOP chairman, pointed to recent gains for Romney that have lifted him to a virtual tie in most national polls. "The challenger always wins in a tie race," he said.

Axelrod, Priebus and McDonnell spoke on CNN's "State of the Union." Warner spoke on "Fox News Sunday" and Cutter on ABC's "This Week."

Big storm scrambles presidential campaign schedules

LAND O'LAKES, Fla. (AP) ? The big storm taking aim at the East Coast a little more than a week before the election has scrambled campaign plans, with both candidates canceling events and President Barack Obama moving up his departure for Florida to beat the storm.

In an extraordinarily tight race, Hurricane Sandy has forced Obama and Republican Mitt Romney to toss out carefully mapped-out itineraries as the candidates work to maximize voter turnout while avoiding any suggestion they were putting politics ahead of public safety. Romney canceled plans to campaign in Virginia on Sunday, opting instead to join running mate Paul Ryan in Ohio.

"The storm will throw havoc into the race," Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., said on "Fox News Sunday," noting that a Monday rally with Obama and former President Bill Clinton has already been canceled.

David Axelrod, a top adviser to Obama's campaign, said it was impossible to predict how the storm would affect the election but acknowledged it could drive down turnout to Obama's detriment.

"Obviously, we want unfettered access to the polls, because we think the more people that come out, the better we're going to do," Axelrod said on CNN's "State of the Union." ''And so, to the extent that it makes it harder, that's a source of concern."

On Saturday, Romney was in Florida speaking of bipartisanship, while Obama tried to nail down New Hampshire's four electoral votes.

The former Massachusetts governor presented himself as a staunch conservative during the Republican primaries but has struck a more moderate tone as he appeals for support from women and independent voters. He promised to "build bridges" with Democrats.

Romney coupled his message with digs at Obama for "shrinking from the magnitude of the times" and advancing an agenda that lacks vision.

Obama, heading to Florida on Sunday night rather than Monday as first planned, spoke with volunteers at a Teamsters hall in Manchester, N.H., on Saturday. "We don't know how this thing is going to play out. These four electoral voters right here could make all the difference."

Winning the White House takes 270 electoral votes. Obama is ahead in states and the District of Columbia representing 237 electoral votes; Romney has a comfortable lead in states with 191 electoral votes. The rest lie in nine contested states that remain too close to call.

The president adjusted his campaign speech at a Nashua rally to appeal to voters in low-tax New Hampshire, hammering Romney for raising taxes and fees when he led Massachusetts.

Obama accused Romney of running in Massachusetts on a pledge to lower taxes, then making life more expensive for the middle class after taking office.

"All he's offering is a big rerun of the same policies," Obama said.

The candidates worked to lock down every possible early vote without intruding on emergency preparations as the storm's expected track looked to affect at least four of the most competitive states: New Hampshire, North Carolina, Ohio and Virginia.

Obama canceled appearances in Prince William County, Va., on Monday, and Colorado Springs, Colo., on Tuesday so he could monitor Hurricane Sandy.

He moved the departure for Florida to beat the storm and planned a Monday stop in Youngstown, Ohio, before returning to Washington.

Instead of campaigning in Virginia as scheduled, Romney was set to join Ryan for three stops of his Ohio bus tour. Romney's trip to Florida was timed to coincide with the first day of in-person early voting in a state where 29 electoral votes are up for grabs.

Vice President Joe Biden canceled a Saturday rally in coastal Virginia Beach, Va., to allow officials there to focus on disaster preparedness and local security concerns. But he went ahead with an appearance in Lynchburg, which is inland.

Biden said Romney and Ryan are fleeing from their record to appear more moderate than they are. The Republican nominees, Biden said, "are counting on the American people to have an overwhelming case of amnesia."

LegacyStories.org announces the first API for FamilySearch Family ...

LegacyStories.org is a archive website that describes its mission as:
Our mission is to provide a secure platform to archive personal testimonies that represent the living history of our time and the legacy of our ancestors while connecting families to share these stories regardless of geographical impediments.
They are presently the first such organization to have a direct connection (API) to FamilySearch.org's?Family Tree program. Here is a copy of the announcement:
LegacyStories is proud to be the first web application to be FAMILY TREE ACCESS CERTIFIED by FamilySearch.?
This special certification allows our LegacyStories members to search for and bookmark their writings, photos and oral narratives to ancestors found in the FamilySearch.org Family Tree?
In late November, 2012, FamilySearch will launch the revolutionary TREE CONNECTfeature. At that time our members will be able to easily link their bookmarked stories to the Family Tree.
One of the features of FamilySearch Family Tree that has been discussed in their presentations on the subject will be the ability to link to or incorporate media with the individual records. FamilySearch has indicated that this will occur in the future, but it now appears that the future may be sooner than later.

As I see it, FamilySearch can either increase its storage capacity exponentially to accommodate media files, or it can license out the function to third-party developers. It appears that FamilySearch will license this out to developers, even if it decides in the future to host media files.

LegacyStories.org?includes the following;

  • The Living Legacy Project which includes the "I Ask" or International Association of Storykeepers, an organization of independent heritage professionals dedicated to saving the living history of our time. Members are mentored through an online Certified Legacy Advisor course, then provided career pathways to serve growing demand in the senior living and financial planning arenas.
  • LegacyStories.org, the official family-connection archive and sharing platform for the Living Legacy Project. The site provides free and secure cloud-based back-up storage for the things families hold most dear?their legacy stories, photos, audios and family history. The site enables members to discriminately share this content and collaborate in its accumulation with anyone they choose. Each story or media contribution can be linked to one of 2.5 billion records as part of the world?s genealogical tree.
  • Legacy Matters a?kick-start program designed to help get the ball rolling. We have a program for families/individuals looking for assistance and a program for care facilities interested in implementing the program for their residents.

It will be interesting to see how future concepts begin to interface with Family Tree.?

Northeast US oil companies prepare for Hurricane Sandy

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Oil refineries along the U.S. Atlantic Seaboard braced for Hurricane Sandy on Friday, putting in place emergency plans ahead of the storm's expected landfall in the Northeast early next week.

Six East Coast oil refineries representing 1.19 million barrels per day, or 7 percent of total U.S. capacity, could potentially be hit by the deadly storm, which left 21 dead as it passed through the Caribbean and churned northward.

The threat of the storm has boosted gasoline and heating oil futures and cash product prices in the New York Harbor over the past two sessions.

Forecasters say Sandy is expected to be pulled in by another storm system moving from the west, making it come ashore in the northeast late Monday or early Tuesday and unleashing heavy rains, storm surges and possibly near hurricane-force winds.

Some forecasters say Sandy has the potential to be a multibillion-dollar disaster, wreaking greater damage than last year's Hurricane Irene, but it was too soon to tell its actual trajectory and refiners were taking early steps to prepare.

"Both our East Coast refineries have comprehensive hurricane preparedness procedures in place that they will implement based on the storm track, as they did last year for Hurricane Irene," said Michael Karlovich, a spokesman for PBF Energy.

PBF Energy owns and operates two East Coast refineries, the 190,000 barrel per day Delaware City plan and the 180,000 Paulsboro plant in Southern New Jersey, across the Delaware River from the Philadelphia area.

Hurricane Irene, which hit the region in August 2011, caused severe flooding and power outages all along the East Coast, and some refinery disruptions. Phillips 66 closed its 238,000 barrel per day Bayway refinery in Linden, New Jersey and other refiners cut back rates but the oil industry escaped Irene with minor, if any, damage.

Hess Corp. said on Friday it had implemented its storm plan for its 70,000 bpd refinery in Port Reading, New Jersey and that it would continue to watch Sandy's progress.

In addition, two other plants are potentially within the storm's path, Philadelphia Energy Solutions's 330,000 bpd Philadelphia refinery and Delta's Monroe Energy 185,000 bpd Trainer, Pennsylvania plant.

Oil markets are closely watching for any potential disruptions to gasoline and heating oil supplies, as lean fuel stockpiles of fuel in the region make the East Coast vulnerable to price spikes, especially ahead of the winter heating season.

New Orleans torn between Madonna show and Halloween go-go boys

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) - In a city that loves nothing better than flamboyant costumes and extravagant parties, the annual Halloween bash in downtown New Orleans on Saturday night to benefit people with AIDS would seem like a sure-fire hit.

But patrons of the costume contest and stage show are also wild about Madonna, whose first local concert in almost three decades is scheduled the same night at the New Orleans Arena.

"When Madonna comes to town, how do you go up against that?" asked Arthur Roger, organizer of this year's Halloween show and a founding member of Halloween's in New Orleans, Inc.

Halloween party organizers fear the Madonna concert will draw crowds away from the main event of their charity show - billed as a Monster Brawl with "hot go-go boys" performing in a boxing ring.

Roger reasoned that since his party's main event does not begin until midnight and goes until 4 a.m., people should be able to attend Madonna's concert, which begins at 8 p.m., and then hurry over to the Halloween show.

Still, he said, he is worried about reports her concerts in other cities have run late, with some going until 1 a.m., and he has reached out to the pop diva's representatives asking them to end the performance on time.

So far, organizers have not received a response, Roger said.

Nick Nevares, an event producer and previous chairman of the Halloween bash, plans to attend both events. He doubts that hard-partying denizens of New Orleans will overlook the famous annual show.

"Next to the Southern Decadence festival, this is the largest gathering of gay men and women in the city, and we have a good following from out of town," he said.

Roger hopes that when Madonna ends her concert, she might consider coming on over to catch a round in the boxing ring. "It would be fantastic, I think she'd love the performance," he said.

Phone calls to a spokesman for Madonna were not returned.
