Dick Durbin: Benghazi Was Not A Coverup, Iraq WMD Intelligence Was

Senator Dick Durbin (D- Ill.) came to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's defense on Wednesday during a congressional hearing on the deadly Sept. 11 attack on a U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

Clinton appeared before the Senate Foreign Relations committee to testify about the State Department's handling of the Benghazi assault, which claimed the lives of Ambassador Chris Stevens and three others. Over the course of the hearing, Republican committee members -- most notably Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) -- criticized Clinton repeatedly for what they characterized as a purposeful attempt by the administration to mislead the public about the causes of the attack.

Durbin, who sits on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and was a member of the panel questioning Clinton, used his speaking time to defend the Obama administration's post-Benghazi investigation, by way of contrast with the Bush administration's political posturing in the months leading up to the United State's 2003 invasion of Iraq.

[I have] five words for [critics] to reflect on: Iraqi weapons on mass destruction. We were told by every level of government here that there were Iraqi weapons of mass destruction that justified a war. The invasion of the united states. We are still searching for those weapons. They didn't exist. Thousands of Americans lost their lives. We could have a hearing on that if you like.

Durbin went on to characterize the information-gathering process carried out after the Benghazi attack as conducted in good faith.

[Investigators] did a thorough review here, found shortcomings in our protection of our people overseas and reported them honestly. You not only initiated that review, you accepted those findings in their totality -- no cover-up, an attempt to be totally honest, and to make sure a tragedy like this never happens again.

The flu is not inevitable

A Christian Science perspective.

By Ann Van Tassel / January 24, 2013

The top story of every news report I had seen for weeks was ?The Flu.? (There, it just happened again, flu is at the top of this report!) Not only was it at the top of every news report, it was the subject of almost every commercial. It was the topic of conversation.

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

It?s now late January, so it?s not so unusual for the flu to be in the news. But this time it seemed to me to be a little different. This time there seemed to be an intensity that I hadn?t seen before, more of a suggestion of inevitability that everyone would get it.

?Inevitable? is a word that means impossible to avoid or prevent. However, I questioned this inevitability. As a student of Christian Science I?ve learned that things are not always as they seem, disease being one of those things. I?ve learned to look for the source of something to understand its nature. What is the source of the flu? Is it germs invading a material body? Does this explanation have its source in God, the creator of all things? The Bible tells us, ?God is love? (I John 4:16). I couldn?t reconcile the thought of a loving God subjecting His creation to disease. I had a choice. I could be fearful about the inevitability of catching the flu, or I could trust that God was loving and caring for me. Could I trust God?

I had a chance to find out a few days later. I had a restless night. I awoke with all the symptoms the media defined as relating to flu. I tried my best to proceed with my day. However, in the afternoon I returned to bed. I couldn?t get comfortable enough to fall asleep, so I decided to turn my thought away from my misery and concentrate on something else. Immediately the thought came to me to think good ? as in divine good, or Godlike ? thoughts. So I thought about what God would be thinking about me, how He loved me and how He could never see me as being anything other than the way He made me, pure and perfect. I fell asleep.

When I awoke I was completely free from every symptom. It wasn?t as though I was just rested and better; it was as though I had never had a single one of the symptoms. Although the symptoms had been quite evident both to me and my family, now they were gone. I was completely and unmistakably my regular self again.

More than just a quick fix of the flu, this dramatic change indicated to me an underlying principle of perfection. This perfect state of being was understood and even required by Jesus, who said, ?Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is perfect? (Matthew 5:48). If, in reality, our state of being is always perfect, we can rely on our understanding of this to correct any misconception that we are diseased or imperfect in any way. When we do away with misconceptions, they disappear. When we do away with the misconception of disease, it disappears from our experience.

Don?t we owe it to ourselves and others to ?be perfect? in this way, not to see disease of any kind as inevitable? Mary Baker Eddy discovered that disease was not the solid reality it claimed to be but instead was a misconception of reality, the reality that Jesus taught us about, the reality that God, good, creates. She wrote, ?To divest thought of false trusts and material evidences in order that the spiritual facts of being may appear, ? this is the great attainment by means of which we shall sweep away the false and give place to the true? (?Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,? p. 428). She taught that as we do this that we, too, can eliminate disease from our lives and the lives of others.

This experience proved to me that I could trust God. God is Love. What is truly inevitable is God?s love for His perfect creation.

ZoneBox Is a Simple Mac App that Allots and Tracks Time for Specific ProjectsMac: Managing how much time you have to spend on projects throughout the day is never easy, but ZoneBox is a small Mac app that helps give you a better idea of how much time you have using a technique called timeboxing.

Timeboxing is a simple project management technique that allots a fixed amount of time for an activity similar to the Pomodoro Technique. So, if you need to finish a project, you give it 3 hours in the day, add 10 minutes to do something else, and so on. Just enter in the tasks you have to do for the day into ZoneBox, select the amount of time you have to dedicate to them, and click the "zone in" button to start the countdown. You'll find all kinds of time tracking apps that track what you do throughout the day, but ZoneBox helps you plan your day in the simplest way possible.

Netanyahu says preventing nuclear Iran his primary challenge

TEL AVIV (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in an election victory speech on Wednesday, said preventing a nuclear-armed Iran would be the primary challenge facing the new government he intends to form.

"I am proud to be your prime minister, and I thank you for giving me the opportunity, for the third time, to lead the state of Israel," he told a cheering crowd at the campaign headquarters of his right-wing Likud party.

Exit polls showed Likud, allied with the ultranationalist Yisrael Beitenu party, emerging from Tuesday's vote as still the biggest bloc in the 120-member parliament, with 31 seats, despite a drop in their support and a surprise surge by a new centrist party.

Netanyahu said he intended to form as broad a governing coalition as possible, suggesting he would go beyond a traditional alliance with other right-wing and religious partners.

"The first challenge was and remains preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons," he said in his speech.

Netanyahu has called Tehran's nuclear program an existential threat to Israel and has stoked international concern by hinted strongly at possible Israeli military action to stop Iran from developing an atomic bomb.

He has said that by the summer, Iran may reach a level of uranium enrichment that would enable it to move rapidly towards building a nuclear weapon.

Iran, which has been hit by Western sanctions over its nuclear activities, says it is enriching uranium for peaceful purposes only.

Emotional intelligence mapped in brain: Study of Vietnam veterans with combat-related brain injuries

Jan. 22, 2013 ? A new study of 152 Vietnam veterans with combat-related brain injuries offers the first detailed map of the brain regions that contribute to emotional intelligence -- the ability to process emotional information and navigate the social world.

The study found significant overlap between general intelligence and emotional intelligence, both in terms of behavior and in the brain. Higher scores on general intelligence tests corresponded significantly with higher performance on measures of emotional intelligence, and many of the same brain regions were found to be important to both.

The study appears in the journal Social Cognitive & Affective Neuroscience.

"This was a remarkable group of patients to study, mainly because it allowed us to determine the degree to which damage to specific brain areas was related to impairment in specific aspects of general and emotional intelligence," said study leader Aron K. Barbey, a professor of neuroscience, of psychology and of speech and hearing science at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology at the University of Illinois.

A previous study led by Barbey mapped the neural basis of general intelligence by analyzing how specific brain injuries (in a larger sample of Vietnam veterans) impaired performance on tests of fundamental cognitive processes.

In both studies, researchers pooled data from CT scans of participants' brains to produce a collective, three-dimensional map of the cerebral cortex. They divided this composite brain into 3-D units called voxels. They compared the cognitive abilities of patients with damage to a particular voxel or cluster of voxels with those of patients without injuries in those brain regions. This allowed the researchers to identify brain areas essential to specific cognitive abilities, and those that contribute significantly to general intelligence, emotional intelligence, or both.

They found that specific regions in the frontal cortex (behind the forehead) and parietal cortex (top of the brain near the back of the skull) were important to both general and emotional intelligence. The frontal cortex is known to be involved in regulating behavior. It also processes feelings of reward and plays a role in attention, planning and memory. The parietal cortex helps integrate sensory information, and contributes to bodily coordination and language processing.

"Historically, general intelligence has been thought to be distinct from social and emotional intelligence," Barbey said. The most widely used measures of human intelligence focus on tasks such as verbal reasoning or the ability to remember and efficiently manipulate information, he said.

"Intelligence, to a large extent, does depend on basic cognitive abilities, like attention and perception and memory and language," Barbey said. "But it also depends on interacting with other people. We're fundamentally social beings and our understanding not only involves basic cognitive abilities but also involves productively applying those abilities to social situations so that we can navigate the social world and understand others."

The new findings will help scientists and clinicians understand and respond to brain injuries in their patients, Barbey said, but the results also are of broader interest because they illustrate the interdependence of general and emotional intelligence in the healthy mind.

The study team also included Roberto Colom, of the Universidad Aut?noma de Madrid, and Jordan Grafman, now at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago.

This study was conducted in part at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., with support from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke at the National Institutes of Health.
