REPORTS TO: Section Leader, In Situ Applications

DESCRIPTION OF GROUP

The In Situ Oil Sands Group is responsible for the regulation of in situ oil sands development inAlberta. The In Situ Oil Sands Group is a highly technical group that reviews proposed and existing in situ oil sands development and evaluates oil sands resources.

PURPOSE OF ROLE:

The focus of this position is to provide the effective and timely review of applications related to thermal in situ oil sands development and to conduct surveillance of the resource recovery performance associated with in situ oil sands development in the Athabasca,Peace River, and Cold Lake Oil Sands Areas.

RESPONSIBILITIES/ DUTIES:

  • Conduct comprehensive reservoir engineering evaluations of planned and operating in situ oil sands projects, including the evaluation of the bitumen recovery process and performance and identification of resource conservation issues.
  • Complete subsurface technical assessments of in situ oil sands development and operations and prepare written recommendations for appropriate ERCB decision making processes.
  • Coordinate a multi-discipline team reviewing in situ oil sands development applications, including new in situ oil sands thermal projects and expansions or changes to existing thermal projects.
  • Communicate with representatives from industry, government, and other stakeholders regarding application and regulatory requirements associated with in situ oil sands development.
  • Participate in initiatives tasked with developing recommendations related to operational practices and regulatory requirements for in situ oil sands development and associated infrastructure.
  • Provide technical support for subsurface issues in hearings as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Engineering degree with a minimum of 5 years progressive related experience in reservoir engineering.
  • Strong technical understanding of thermal recovery methods including steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) and cyclic steam stimulation (CSS).
  • A comprehensive understanding of reservoir engineering concepts and methods.
  • Highly motivated with special attention to detail and technical accuracy.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects with limited supervision.
  • Strong technical writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills.
  • Well-developed organizational skills.
  • Familiarity with ERCB policy and regulations regarding oil sands development and familiarity with ERCB application processes would be an asset.
  • Working knowledge of common business software, including MS Office and GIS software. Working knowledge of Oil Field Manager would be an asset.
