Red, Rock and Blue V raises $110,000 for Louisiana military

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

Thanks largely in part to Mother Nature's unbelievable cooperation, all-time highs in event sponsorship, the continued, massive swelling of softball / kickball team registrations and the overall, overwhelming support of the Baton Rouge community, "Red, Rock and Blue V" soared to record-shattering numbers in 2013. RR&B V raised a staggering total of $110,000 for Louisiana military, roughly a $50,000 jump from the previous year. All proceeds from the weekend of family fun activities that occurred June 28-30 will be donated to The Blue Star Mothers of Louisiana and Support Our War Heroes, a pair of non-profit, 501-C charity organizations which support local military and their families.

The 4th Annual "Celebrity/Sorta Celebrity Softball Game" was a big hit as usual, attracting roughly 1,200 fans and a host of well-known participants to Cypress Mounds Baseball Complex. Young and old packed the stands to watch and meet the likes of Ryan Theriot, Joe Horn, KeKe Mingo, Brandon Bass, Marcus Thornton, Nikki Caldwell, Rueben Randle, Jarrett Lee, Kimberlyn Duncan, David Dellucci, Brandon Lafell, Beth Torina and many, many more. The Red Team fell into an early 4-0 hole, but roared back to thump The Blue Team 11-4. Former LSU baseball great Jason Williams was named the game's MVP for The Red Team, after a big offensive day at the plate and some slow-pitch efforts that stumped The Blue.

The Red, Rock and Blue Charity concert was also an awesome night and memorable experience for all in attendance. Combining tremendous music and fun for a great cause, 90's hit-machine Gin Blossoms packed The Varsity Theatre near the gates of LSU and delivered a wonderful performance. With lead vocalist Robin Wilson and his bandmates in top form, the Gin Blossoms ripped through such classics as "Hey Jealously", "Found Out About You", "Follow You Down", "Until I Hear It From You" and "Allison Road" to a very enthusiastic response. Local, talented musical act Winbourne got the party started right, opening the show and leading the concert into another successful venture.

The 16th Annual "Doucet/Begnaud Invitational" registered an epic 76 teams overall, more than quadrupling it's total of 18 just five summers before. BREC's Oak Villa Softball Complex was bursting wall-to-wall with softball, kickball, music and good times all weekend, as this tournament continues to be the backbone and biggest fundraiser for RR&B. Teams from as far as Jacksonville, FL registered and drove over to be a part.

And finally, the first-ever, "Red, Rock and Blue Youth Baseball NIT" at Cypress Mounds Baseball Complex was also an immediate smash, drawing 55 teams from throughout the South. Young boys from ages 7-14 enjoyed the thrill of America's pastime, while raising money to thank those who protect her freedom.

For those who support "Red, Rock and Blue" each year, we truly thank you for your support and transforming this event into a major success. For those who haven't been involved yet, we graciously invite you to be a part next summer.

Red, Rock and Blue VI is set for June 27-29, 2014. The 5th annual "Celebrity/Sorta Celebrity Softball Game" will be played Friday, June 27th at Cypress Mounds Baseball Complex. The 17th annual "Doucet/Begnaud Invitational" is set for June 28-29 (possibly the 27h as well) at Oak Villa. The second annual RR&B Youth Baseball Tournament is scheduled for June 28-29 at Cypress Mounds. And finally, the date of The Red, Rock and Blue Charity Concert is yet to be determined, possibly taking place either slightly before or after these dates, at The Varsity Theatre.
