Preparations under way for demolition of first church ever built in Belmont

The wire fence is up, a demolition permit has been filed and workers were continuing to empty out contents of the former First Congregational Church on Jan. 17 in what appears to be preparation for the building to come down.

The former First Congregational Church of Waverly at 471 Trapelo Road was sold on Jan. 7 to a E and A Properties, LLC for $1.3 million.? The new owner of the property, Edward Hovsepian who also owns E H Construction in Watertown has said that he is ?not exactly positive yet? what he will do with the building. However, he filed a demolition permit with Belmont?s Community Development office on Dec. 12.

Built in 1870, the building is the oldest standing church structure in Belmont but it is not protected by any historic designation, said Belmont Historic District Commission (HDC) member Joe Cornish.? The HDC is presenting a demolition by-law to Town Meeting this spring, he said.? Such a by-law would delay the demolition for a certain period of time, typically six months to a year in other towns, and allow historic commission members to work with the owner to try and ensure a ?more sensitive use of the building.?
